The marriage indices compiled by the WPA in 1938-40 for almost all IN
counties have been put online by
Ancestry.com at
http://ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/5059.htm accessible without
charge until 21 September.
Having used it for a couple of hours I've found that the database has
considerable limitations, at least for the time being. Only about
the first third of the alphabetical list of counties is accessible,
in most instances up through Grant County; I could find no entries
for Franklin, but noticed a couple for Johnson County. Bartholomew
and Decatur Counties are accessible, but not Rush and Shelby. For
Decatur County, coverage appears to be limited to Marriage Books H-K
(1852-1878) and L-P (1878-1905), but includes the missing volume for
1896-99.
The search function will search for combinations of surnames, given
names and years, but not counties. To locate a surname in a given
county you either need to search through all entries or estimate
where, among the number of pages shown, Decatur, for example, might
fall in a spectrum from Allen to Grant. Generally the entries are
listed by county alphabetically, but sometimes there are two
alphabetical series; for the 370 Ballard entries, I found none from
Decatur in the first series, but found what I think is a complete
list in the second series, towards the end.
