I am researching the name of John McQuiston in the Decatur Cty.,
Indiana area. He died supposedly in Greensburg about 1878. If
anyone can help I would appreciate. Sher
From a history of Lawrenceburg in Dearborn County: "John C.
McQuiston, born in Madison, Indiana, lived in Lawrenceburg during his
teens and early twenties, before joining the new railroads under
construction in the 1850s. He later moved to Greensburg." He appears
in the 1870 census of Ripley Co as John McQueston, RR Supt, and as JC
McQuiston in the 1880 census of Greensburg as RR Master. There is a
brief biography of Col McQuiston (1823-1903) at
http://www.indianainthecivilwar.com/hoosier/mcquisto.htm indicating
that he died in Arkansas.
John C McQuiston was Colonel of the 123rd Regiment during the Civil
War. The regiment was recruited largely in Greensburg, mustered into
service on 9 March 1864. It joined Sherman in Georgia, participated
in the battle of Nashville in Dec 1864 and was in NC from Feb 1865
until it was mustered out in August. There's a more detailed account

McQuiston was breveted as Brigadier General on 13 Mar 1865.
