If Decatur County is like Shelby County, Indiana, the original death certificate would
have been issued at the time of death. The books and page they refer to would have one or
two lines in reference to the person's death. What you have is what they issue when a
death certificate is requested.

We had a wonderful experience in Greensburg researching at the courthouse. I
don't know for sure if you would be able to see the actual death cert. but
my guess would be "yes". We were able to look at court records from the
1860's and the staff was very helpful to us in both finding the records and
in getting them copied.

Subject: [INDECATU] ? re: Death Cert Received from Decatur Cty
Hi,
I rec'd a typed up Certificate of Death from Greensburg. I'd rather have
had a copy of the original so don't know if I asked for the wrong thing or
if
they don't copy the pages of the books and that's where this question
comes
in. In the upper corner they typed in which book and page number the
information was found.
So, for those of you who have done research 'on the ground' in Greensburg,
if I ever found myself in Greensburg would I be allowed to see the
original?
Can I get a copy of the original? Or does the original document give me
nothing that this gives me.
This told me name of deceased, residence, date of death, place of death,
sex, race, age, reason given, certified by which person, buried in which
county
and cemetery, date of burial and funeral director. This person died in
1918.
All good stuff but parent's names would have helpful as would the
birthplace, name of person filling in certificate, etc.
So, is there more information in the ledgers other than what was typed up
on
this certificate for me? Will they mail it to me if I send a check and
what
should I ask for?
Thanks!
