I just brought home papers of my father's and included is "The Cunningham Family
of Daviess County, Indiana and GOUGH, SHIRCLIFF, RANEY and HOPKINS Alliances" by J.B.
Cunningham, Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois, published 1965.
I am not directly related to the Raney's, (my ancestors are the Cunninghams), but the
author J.B. was related to both and provides quite a bit of info on the Raney's
ya'll have mentioned, as well as their connections to the other names above.
This document cooborates the marriage of Jeremiah and Mary Joan Sheehan Moore in
Washington County, KY 23 Dec 1797. They moved to Martin County, Indiana (then Vincennes
Territory) in 1818 and he died in 1840. His grave is clearly marked in the old Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery, about 2 miles SE of Loogootee, Indiana.
It goes on to note Jeremiah was related to Zachariah Riney and was probably the son of
James, John or Jonathon, early pioneers to KY.
His decendants are listed as:
SARAH ANN MATILDA, m. Charles Tuol (Tewel), Washington Co., KY 1800.
ELIZABETH HESTOR, b. 1802; m. James Andrew Crooks who came fr North Carolina to KY, thence
to Martin Co., IN in 1818.
JAMES b. 1809; m. Mary Holland; son Jeremiah.
JONATHAN m. Patsy Beck
JOHN FELIX b. 1804; m. Mary Neal 6 Feb 1827. He d. 21 Sep 1887. Their daughter ELIZABETH
MAHALA RANEY b. 1829 m. Patrick Hopkins, she died 1887.
A note at the bottom shows:
ZACHARIA RINEY m. Sarah Bolds in Washing Co., KY 24 Feb 1824. He was b. St. Mary's
Co., MD in 1763 the son of Thomas Riney. His home in KY was the Rolling Fork Area and the
school he conducted was in Hardin (now LaRue) County. He died in the Trappist Monastery,
Gethaemani, KY in 1859. Referenced from "The Catholic Church on the Kentucky
Frontier" by Sister Romana Mattingly, Ph.D.
There is a page of Raney Marriages for WA Co., KY 1792-1825 with a few thrown in from
Nelson Co., KY, as well as documentation for the other names listed if any are
interested.
