Margaret Neiry, Real Daughter of Revolution, Dead
Her Father, Jonas Frazee, a Revolutionary Soldier--Probably Last Real D.A.R. in State.
Mrs. Margaret Neiry, believed to be the last real daughter of the American Revolution in
Indiana died at 1:45 o'clock this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. T.
Armes, 1115 Downey Ave. Mrs Neiry was the daughter of Jonas Frazee, a soldier in the war
of the revolution. She was in her 85th year. Mrs. Neiry fell on December 26, breaking her
hip and one arm. These injuries hastened her death. She had been practically helpless
since the accident. Jonas Frazee, the father of Mrs Neiry was born and reared in N.J. and
enlisted from that state in the revolutionary army. She was only fifteen years old at the
time of his death in 1854 and regretted that she did not realize the importance of
learning more about her fathers service in the revolutionary army. However there were
ample documents and papers in the possession of the family giving the details of Mr.
Frazee's military record to prove her claim as a real daughter of a revolutionary
soldier. A sister of Mrs. Neiry, Mrs.!
Jane Skidmore, of Wichita, Tex. had the papers in her possession up until her death last
summer. As a reward for his army service Mr. Frazee received a land grant from the
governement but did not take advantage of it. Later he was put on the government's
pension roll, receiving $80 a year. Mrs. Neiry was born in Hamilton county, Ohio and was
married there, moving to Daviess county shortly after the marriage. The family lived in
Veale township for many years. Mrs Neiry joined the D.A.R. at Wichita, Tex while making
her home there with a relative, and transferred her membership in the White River Chapter
of the D.A.R. in this city after her return to Washington. In 1915 the national
organization of the D.A.R. officially recognized Mrs. Neiry's claim as a daughter of a
revolutionary soldier and placed her on the pension roll of the national organization. Up
until her accident on December 24, Mrs Neiry had been quite active for one of her years.
She was a willing and interesti!
ng talker and on one occasion appeared before the members of White Riv
er Chapter of the D.A.R. and related to them her fathers record as a revolutionary
soldier. The deceased was married to John Mahonney in 1860 and to this union were born the
following children: Sarah Elizabeth, Hannah, Timothy, Edward J., Caroline, Eliza Rebecca
and Sarah Ann. Mr Mahoney died in 1875 and Mrs. Mahoney was married to Michael Neiry in
1877. To this union were born the following children: John, Annie and Julia. Mr Neiry died
in 1898. Mrs Neiry is survived by the following children: Edward J. Mahonney of
Greenville, Miss., Mrs. Caroline McGee of Loogootee, Mrs. Rebecca Tennis and Mrs Julia
Armes of WAshington and Mrs Annie Kunkler of Linton. She also leaves 24 grandchildren, and
eight great grandchildren.
