broken hip, received two days ago in a fall at her home. She was taken to the hospital
yesterday afternoon for treatment. Born in Kentucky on October 12, 1862, the deceased was
a daughter of Anderson and Jane (Shadd) Armes, and came to this city as a small child, it
being recalled that the family came overland, the father carrying the small baby on
horseback. She married Mr. Eskew 49 years ago, and he died about four years ago in this
city. Surviving Mrs. Eskew are four of six children born to the union, Mrs. Clara Brian,
Alva and Henry Eskew of Washington, and Mrs. Joseph Bailey of Cincinnati. Two
half-brothers and one half-sister also surv!

in failing health the last year. She was born May 19, 1882, daughter of Thomas and
Margaret (Armes) Potts. On Feb 8, 1905, she married David Jackson Armes who died in 1964.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs.
Zed (Mildred) Davis, Washington, and five sons, Wilbert Armes, Montgomery, Rt 2, Harold
Armes, Wheatland, Glen Armes, Washington, Roy Armes, Indianapolis, and Clarence Armes,
Greenwood. She leaves 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and one great great
grandchild. One daughter and three brothers preceded her in death. She was the last of her
immediate family. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Otterbein Church with

Hedrick, who preceded her in death and later married Illus Ledgerwood. She leaves her
husband and two sons, Claude and Hugh Hedrick of Washington, eight step-children: Victor
of Clay City, IN; Mrs. Vonda Wilson of Sioux City, Iowa; Guy and Ollie, Kingsley, Iowa;
Mrs. Freda McKinney, of Seymour; Mrs. Mable Gibson, Loogootee, IN; Vernon of Esconaba, MI;
Two sisters preceded her in death, Erma Jane and Carrie Scott and one brother, Neal; one

at the Eastgate Manor at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Son of Ellis and Susan Allen Ledgerwood, he was
born Feb 5, 1887, in Martin County. He was married three times, first to Grace Devine,
later to Gordia Hedrick and then to Ellen Sutton. Each preceded him in death. He was a
member of the Alfordsville United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Guy, Le Mars,
Iowa; Vernon "Bus", Jackson, Wyoming; a daughter, Mrs. Noble (Mae) Gibson,
Loogootee; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Harold Riggins,
and a brother, Jacob, Loogootee, also survive. Two daughters, three sons, four brothers
and two sisters have died. Services will be at the Titzer Funeral Home in Loogootee at 1
p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the South Martin Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m.

Armes, age 70, 111 South Meridian Street, city, passed away at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday at the
Daviess County Hospital. He had been ill for one year and seriously ill only a few days.
Mr. Armes was born in Daviess County, May 23, 1889, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel
Armes. His wife, the former Zaela (sic) Hedrick, preceded him in death in 1939. The
deceased lived in this community all his life and was employed as a construction worker.
Children are Mrs. Lyndall Wyatt of Cisne, IL; Robert Armes of this city; Mrs. Ethel
Stieneman of Santa Monica, CA; Mrs. Mabel Canary of Modoc, IN; Harold Armes of Hastings,
NE; Hubert Armes of Alfordsville; and Miss Joyce Armes of Indianapolis. There are 10
grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Lois Benskin of Flora, IL, survives. Funeral services will
be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Grove Church in Reeve Township with burial in the
Oak Grove cemetery there. R!

County, she was the daughter of William and Agnes Ross. She had worked at Prairie Village
Living Center where she was head of housekeeping for several years. She was a member of
Washington Eagles Auxiliary and had attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. She is survived by
two daughters, Sandra (Richard) Heshelman and Marsha Dyer, both of Plainville; one son,
David Eskew of Washington; one sister, Pauline Lagle of Washington; one brother, William
"Bob" Ross of Washington; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild. Her husband, William "Bill" Eskew, whom she married Oct.
5, 1945, died Aug. 5, 1985. One son, Richard Eskew, is also deceased. The funeral will be
at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ed Lee Mor!
