Hi Linda,
I just came across a posting of yours from 1999. I hope you are still available to answer
questions since you listed some very familiar names. My father was an Aikman from Daviess
Co, IN., son of Claud and Catherine Williams Aikman. Is this the same Williams line? Her
father was James Williams who died when she was 4, in 1889. I have found nothing about
him, not even where he is buried. I know that his parents are buried in St John's
Cemetery but he seems to have disappeared in all records. If you have anything, I'd
love to get it. My grandmother's mother, Sarah Padgett, remarried in 1893 to Williams
Bradford but died herself 10 years later. is this the Bradford you wrote about? The story
was that William did not want Catherine or her two siblings living with him and Sarah so
they were farmed out. I would love to know who my grandmother lived with. She told us as
kids but it meant nothing then. My sister seems to remember that she inherited from the
woman she lived with the !
dairy farm she and Claud lived on but I don't think that's accurate. How I wish
the 1890 census weren't gone. It would answer a lot of questions for me. William and
Sarah had a daughter, whom we called Aunt DeeDee, and I thought she was the only one
(according to census, too)but recently heard there was another daughter (?)
Another story she told us was that her grandmother, Mary Cissell, was Native American.
I'm not finding that to be the case, unless she was adopted. Yet, this grandmother
was still alive until Catherine (actually known as Kate) was a teenager and her younger
sister was living with this grandmother in the 1900 census(maybe 1910-I don't have it
in front of me right now). And she wasn't the kind to tell false tales. It's also
possible that it was her great-grandmother. I may be forgetting. If so, even her
great-grandmother seems not to be Indian either from what I can learn.
Another question I have has to do with James Williams' father, Martin Lewis. In the
1860 census he was a farmer with property. In 1870 he was a farm laborer with no property.
In 1900 he was still renting. Could you possibly figure that one out? Anything happen
between 1860 county-wide Probably not so what caused him to lose the farm?
Anything, including photos would be greatly appreciated. My tree is private because
I'm pretty inexperienced and probably have mistakes so I don't want to put them
out there. However, if you want to see my tree I'd be happy to share it. I live in
Oregon so my ability to research is strictly long distance.
Thanks in advance for anything you can send. And apologies for the very long email. let me
know your relationship to all these people.
