Hello,
Indiana was probably one of the biggest sources of soldiers for the Union army during the
Civil War. President Lincoln asked each State for a certain number of soldiers within a
certain period of time to quash the rebellion. Many of the volunteers, initially, were
turned away. Our State provided over 200,000 soldiers over the course of the Civil War. If
you come across a soldier's gravestone from an Indiana military unit, I'd take a
photo of it. You can look the records up later.
