Message Board Post:
This coming weekend, I'll be visiting Andersonville National Historic Site (Civil War
prison). Before I go, if possible, I would like to identify specific prisoner(s) with
whom my ancestors had a connection (whether direct relatives, collateral families,
neighbors, soldiers in the same military unit, etc.) I'm certain the visit (even
without a specific connection) will be extremely moving. But it will be even more
meaningful if I and my family are able to ponder an individual soldier's (or
soldiers') experience there and can honor his/their personal service. I have not yet
mined deeply into my family tree's Civil War service; and so far, I have not
identified any immediate relatives with a connection to Andersonville And, with this
opportunity coming up so soon, I won't have time to do much additional research before
I go. I would regret not having known about a special soldier while we're there.
From what I can tell, the CWSSS database will narrow down only to state!
, and there are almost 2000 listed from Indiana alone. So I'd like to ask, please, if
anyone on the boards might kindly help me identify soldier(s) from Daviess and
MartinCounties who were imprisoned at Andersonville. (In particular, I'm interested
in the cluster of early collateral Daviess/Martin collateral family including Chandler,
Gilley, Truelove, Allen, Barr, Alford, Cannon, Buzan, White, etc. However, I'd also
like appreciate hearing about any other soldiers from Daviess/Martin counties. There
were, I think, a couple Daviess/Martin units who served in the Union campaigns through
Tennessee and Georgia, so I imagine there may be at least a couple persons from the area
who were captured and imprisoned at Andersonville.) Thanks so much. (P.S. If
there's anything, such as a photo, you'd like for me to try to get for you while
I'm there, please let me know. We'll only be there for part of the day, but
I'll try to do what I can ...) P.S. FYI, I'll be posting this o!
n both the Daviess and Martin Co. forums.
