Hi kfrick7518,
Could this be the William you are seeking? It appears this William's mother is Isabell
McLin, born in PA, a widow or divorcee by 1850. He has an older sister, Rosan, and they
were both born in Indiana.
1850 United States Federal Census
Name: William McLin
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1833
Birth Place: Indiana
Gender: Male
Home in 1850 (City,County,State): Pike, Marion, Indiana
Family Number: 1468
Household Members:
Name Age
Isabell McLin 46
Rosan McLin 19
William McLin 17
Could not find any marriage information for Isabell and her spouse which might provide a
name for William's father.

Could this be the John Hamilton McLin you are seeking?
1850 United States Federal Census
Name: John H McLin
Age: 10
Estimated birth year: abt 1840
Birth Place: Indiana
Gender: Male
Home in 1850 (City,County,State): Washington, Daviess, Indiana
Family Number: 348
Household Members:
Name Age
John McLin 57
Margaret McLin 21
Jessee McLin 18
Elizabeth McLin 13
John H McLin 10
Sarah McLin 7
John was born in PA and all the rest in Indiana.
--------------------
In the 1860 census, I find William McLin with John's family in Daviess Co., IN. There
is a marriage record for a William McLin in Daviess Co., IN, on 25 June 1857, to Elizabeth
J. Carnahan.
I later find William and Elizabeth V. McKlin in Elk Co., Kansas, in the 1885 Kansas state
census with children Stella, John, Minnie, and Maud, (Wm, Elizabeth, and Stella b. in IN,
John, Minnie, Maud b. in KS) and again in the 1900 Federal census where William McLin is a
widower and children Ezra, Clara, Stella, Minnie, Maud and Louis live with him in Elk Co.,
KS. Based on children's birth places/years, they could have moved from IN to KS
between 1877 and 1880.
I also found a marriage record for William L. McLinn and Elizabeth V. Strickland in
Daviess Co., IN, 8 September 1869.
I found John McLin and Martha Godwin as possibly boarders in a house together in Daviess
Co., IN in 1870 Federal census.
1870 United States Federal Census
Name: John McLin
Birth Year: abt 1842
Age in 1870: 28
Birthplace: Indiana
Home in 1870: Harrison, Daviess, Indiana
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Washington
Household Members:
Name Age
Washington Arms 53
Matilda Arms 50
James Arms 21
Martha Arms 18
Christopher Arms 8
Willis Clark 19
John McLin 28
Martha Godwin 20
Then I find John and Martha McLin in Elk Co, KS, too, in the 1885 Kansas state census, as
well as the 1880, 1900, 1910 Federal censuses. Based on children's birth places/years,
they moved from IN to KS between 1875-1878. I found a marriage record in Daviess Co., IN
for John H. McLinn and Martha A. Godwin, 3 November 1870. There is also another marriage
record for John H. McLinn and Elmira Logan in Daviess Co., IN, 23 February 1868.
You probably have all this since you were asking for the parents of William and John
McLin. It's not clear if they were brothers in a split family or cousins or what.
There appears to be a John McLin b. 1793 in Pennsylvania as potential father of John H.
and Isabell McLin b. 1804 in Pennsylvania as potential mother of William L. I hope this
gives you a bit of food for thought! ;-)
