Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply. I just thought it very curious that the Allender name
was in Daviess County IN -- or at least I read the message that way. The
reason that I have done checking on the name is that Mary (Polly) Stealey
was the young woman who bore an illegitimate child about 1799 that,
according to court records in Monongalia County WV (which was Virginia then
up until the CW), was the son of James Houston, my ancestor. Davis Shockley
stood bond for James (who was about 18 at the time) but James left, going
first to Kentucky (where he married about 7 years later) and then to Monroe
County IN. It was there that Davis Shockley found him in the 1830s and
brought suit to recover his bond. Shockley also found Mary, and she was at
the time married to William Allender and living in Daviess. William was
several years older than Mary (Polly). She gave an affidavit (which I have
copies of) stating that James Houston was her son by James Houston.
I found William Allender and family in the 1830 census in Daviess County but
by the 1840 census I don't find William, but I do find a Joseph Allender
with a male aged between 70 and 80 in his household, and if the census was
taken in somewhat residential order, James Houston lived quite near them. I
also found a George Allender.
By 1850, I don't find Allenders in Daviess County but James Houston
continues to live there. I speculate (can't yet prove) that his James
Houston is the illegitimate son of Mary (Polly) Stealey and that she and
William are the parents of Joseph Allender (and perhaps George Allender),
and that Mary probably died between the 1830 and 1840 census (after 1837
when she gave her deposition), and that the man 70-80 living with Joseph
Allender in the 1840 census is his father William. Now, if I could just
prove any of that!
One last question for you -- Do you have records of any Allenders living in
Daviess County IN after 1840? If so, I would greatly appreciate knowing
about them. Perhaps they could provide more leads for me. Could you share
the information on Joseph Allender and Eliza Hall as to birth dates?
Thanks again for checking. I do appreciate your efforts and your speedy
reply to my original query.
Connie

Hi Connie -
Unfortunately no connection I can make. My William's youngest daughter had
sent me all her family charts back in the mid 1990s (she was in her 90s
then). Someone put her info into PAF and she sent me the family sheets -
over 200 pages. I have since scanned and OCR'd them.
A check of those files and mine could not turn up a connection. My William
Allender was the son of Joseph Allender and Eliza Hall. He was from
Virginia and she was from Tennesee.
Regards,
Ken
