Here's an outline of my CREGAR family that I'm hoping will
look familiar to someone out there! There are MANY variations
of spelling of this surname and this family tried them all out
on each different document type. :-)
John CREGAR was born ~1801 in Ohio (probably Hamilton Co). He's in
the 1830 and 1840 Hamilton Co. OH censuses in Springfield Twp. Married
Mary Ann VANDYKE in 1835 in Springfield, Hamilton Co., OH, then they are
found in Israel Twp in Preble Co., OH in 1850 census. They moved to
Daviess Co., IN between 1854-1857 and John died in Washington, Daviess
Co., IN in 1859. Mary Ann remarried in 1868 to Ralph (Albert) BARNES
and they are found in the 1870 Daviess Co., IN census with Charles (22),
and Alice V. (13) CREAGER.
John and Mary Ann's children included:
Dominicus V. Cregar (from previous marriage of Mary Ann's?) b. 1832 OH,
m. Martha E. KEARNES in IN
Amanda Cregar (my gg-grandmother), b. 1836 OH, m. George W. YEAGER in OH
John M. Cregar, b.~1837 OH, m. Nancy ROGERS in IN
Nancy Cregar, b.~1838 OH*
Mary N. Cregar, b.~1840 OH*
Henry N. Cregar b.~1841 OH*
Charles E. Cregar, b. 1845 OH, m. 1st Louise BRADSBERRY in IN,
2nd Fannie GRANNON in IN
Nicholas Cregar, b. 1847 OH, m. Caroline COLEMAN in IN
Loretta Cregar, b.~1849 OH, m. James HUNLEY in IN
Rachael Cregar, b.~1854 OH, m. Joseph NICHOLS in IN (?)
Alice V. Cregar, b.~1857 IN?, m. William MCDONALD in IN
* Have not found evidence of Nancy, Mary N., or Henry N. CREGAR moving
from Ohio with the rest of the family.
John is our brick wall--don't know his parents or siblings. I suspect
his family may have moved to Hamilton Co. in the very early 1800's from
NJ as did nearly ALL their neighbors in the Springfield area, but have
no
proof as of yet!
Let me know if any of this rings a bell!
Happy New Year!
