"PIONEER RESIDENT DIES TUESDAY. MRS. MARTHA E. CALLAHAN PASSES AWAY AT HOME OF SON,
ALVA CALLAHAN.
Martha E. CALLAHAN, pioneer resident of this community, passed away last Tuesday afternoon
about four o'clock after an illness that extended over a number of years. Mrs.
CALLAHAN had been in failing health for some time and her death was not unexpected.
Martha E. CALLAHAN (nee) CUNNINGHAM was born Nov. 13th, 1848 being past eighty years of
age when called by death. She was a native of this county and practically all her life
was spent within its environs, and in the community in which she died. She grew up to
womanhood in the pioneer environments of our early day, and on January 1, 1870 was united
in marriage to Stever Y. CALLAHAN. From this union four children survive. The husband
and father passed on about eight years ago. These children are Mrs. A. M. WILLIAMS, Mrs.
Homer PERSHING, Mrs. Chas. KIRK and one son, Alva, all of this community.
Mrs. CALLAHAN lived an active Christian life. She was a member of the First Christian
church of this city and her kindness and neighborliness endeared her to a large number of
friends.
Besides the children she leaves 11 grandchildren and a number of more distant relatives.
The funeral service was held Tuesday morning at ten o'clock with Rev. C. H. Buchanan
in charge. Burial was made at Walnut Hill."
