Joseph Kelso was the oldest son of Samuel and Martha (Jackson) Kelso of
Spartanburg Co. SC. He was born 16 Mar 1791. He was an early explorer of
Indiana, returned to S.C. to serve as Capt. In War of 1812.
On Oct 1, 1816, Joseph Kelso, Henry Foster and ___Means (all of Spartanburg
Co. S.C.) Entered land in Knox Co. Ind. This area later to be divided into
several counties, including Daviess.
Joseph Kelso & Mary W. Foster were married 18 Dec. 1816 in Knox Co. Ind. She
the daughter of Moses Foster of Spartanburg S.C. (See his will, Spartanburg
S.C. 1813, Bk A pg 43) She was possibly the sister of Henry Foster who owned
the adjacent land.
Mary (Foster) Kelso died 11 Oct 1832 at age 43.
16 July 1840, Joseph took as his wife Mary Hill, the widow of Patrick John
Conalty. She was probably born in Rockingham Co. Va., in 1802. Her father
was Richard Hill.
The oldest Conalty child, Joseph, was born in VA on 22 Dec 1824. The
Conalty's moved to Indiana in 1834, and Patrick Conalty's estate was probated
20 April 1840. There is a long history of Conolty's in Daviess Co.
Joseph & Mary (Hill) Kelso had 2 children, William who married Joanna
Jackson, and Elizabeth Virginia who married 1, William Newton Kelso, (1859)
2. Samuel Strictland, (1866), 3. William Lewis McLin (1869, all in Daviess
Co.
Mary Hill (Conalty) Kelso died 2 Nov. 1850.
26 Feb 1957 Joseph married for the third time. His bride was Mary Nance, the
widow of his cousin Moses Kelso. Joseph's financial situation at this time
seems to have been in dire straits, and most of his land holdings were gone.
He died in 1863, and is buried in the Kelso-Conolty cemetery near
Alfordsville.
As you can see, I have lots of gaps.and I would truly appreciate any help.
