The Daviess County Democrat, Washington, Indiana, July 26, 1879, page 4:
“OBITUARY
Died, July 18, 1879, near Palestine, Texas, Henry S. JOHNSON, in the twenty-fifth year of
his age. The deceased was a native of Daviess county, being the only son of A. M. and
Lydia JOHNSON, of Harrison township. He was married last December to Miss Clara McCarty,
of Alfordsville, and last April removed with his young bride to the Lone Star State.
On Thursday, August 17, while out buggy riding, in company with his wife, the horses
became frightened and unmanageable, throwing him out of the buggy, inflicting injuries
from which he died on the following day. He remains were brought to this place Monday,
the 21st, and were buried in Oak Grove Cemetery by the Masonic Fraternity.
At the time of his death he was principal of the preparatory department of the Masonic
Institute of Palestine, Texas. He had been a teacher in this county for several years.
He was respected and beloved by all who knew him. He was a true friend, a kind and loving
husband, son and brother. To his devoted wife, father, mother and sister we would say:
“Henry’s troubles are all over, and he is waiting on the golden shore for all his loved
ones.” We ought to acknowledge that this is God’s will, and that he doeth all things
right. Let us hope that in the golden summer of another life husband and wife, mother and
son, sister and brother will gather again in a sweet reunion where partings are unknown.
“We are sailing on an ocean,
To a bright and happy shore;
There our tears will all cease flowing,
There our cares will all be o’er.”
J. B. S.”
