Hi Marion,
Started a reply to you early this a.m., but hit a wrong button and ssent it to you
incomplete. M<aybe I'll do better this time. Here is what I know on Nancy et al.
John from Scotland's first wife was MAry Hyatt. The info I have fromthe Wallace
family history at the White County, IL Library is that they married in Virginia. There
were at least 2 children, Eli and Johnathan. I don't believe Eli or Johnathan joined
their hald brothers and sisters in moving to Indiana. Any way, Johnathan's grandson
was Judge William Henry Wallace. He was a Brigader General in the Confederate Army and
later was a state representative and possibly a federal congressman.
The same info tells me that John from Scotland's second wife was Nancy Matilda de
Saussere from Charleston. We do not know the year they married, nor where, but Rev John
was born in Fredericksburg, VA in 1754. We don't know if John from Scotland and Mary
Hyatt lived in Virginia or SC. We don't know how John from Scotland met Nancy MAtilda
de Saussere.
We don't know how they got from Virginia to SC, with a possible period of time spent
in NC. The de Saussere family name is prominent in SC history. The family are Huguenots,
coming to SC from Switzerland, originally from France. The Hugunot Society in
Charlestonhas no record of Nancy Matilda. We do not know if she was born a de Saussere,
or if her first husband was a member of that family.
Nancy and John from Scotland are supposed tobe buried around Union, SC, but my inquiries
have not turned up any proof in the form of burial records.
I plan to pay a researcher in Greenville, SC to do more research, but later on in the
summer.
Right now, the de Saussere search is pretty top most in Donna's and my mind.
I don't believe our Wallace branch has any connection with the Lew Wallace family. If
we had been related, I thionk the Wallace family members in Washington, IN would have been
aware of it.
I am also interested in why you think Rev. John's father was not born in Scotland.
Can you share that with Donna and myself?
Thanks for your message. Let's keep in touch and share info.
Jim Wallace
