Historic Landmarks Foundation awards grant for Daviess County landmark
Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana recently awarded a $2,000 Indiana Preservation
Grant to Daviess County Historic Landmarks for an architectural feasibility study of the
1924 Jefferson School in Washington. Closed as a school in 1978, the Prairie and Colonial
Revival style building at 150 S Street houses the Daviess County Historical Society's
museum, which is currently closed.
The roof of the National Register-listed building leaks and moisture in the basement has
irreparably damaged some of the museum's collection. To assist in preserving the
landmark, Daviess County Historic Landmarks sought the grant to identify restoration needs
and costs.
Historic Landmarks' grants are available to local preservation organizations for
pre-development work such as feasibility studies, as well as a variety of planning,
fundraising and other activities related to saving landmarks and strengthening
preservation groups.
Indiana Preservation Grants also went to Wabash Valley Trust for Historic Preservation for
Lafayette's 1938 Lafayette Theatre; Kankakee Valley Historical Society for the 1906
Collier Lodge near Kouts, and Jeffersonville Main Street for structural studies of a
historic downtown block recently damaged by fire.
