Becky,
Some Irish had black hair (they are called the "black Irish") - supposedly it
came from a Spanish influence, when Spanish soldiers washed up on the shores of Ireland.
But I think it goes back before that. I see quite a few men described as having black hair
and brown eyes in my Irish lines.
I wonder if you have $37 to spare? If so, you may be interested in getting a photocopied
package of the Widow's Pension from the National Archives (NARA). The price for this
package is likely to go up to over a hundred dollars ($125 I think) in May. You can order
it online, if you have a credit card. I have ordered these packages several times for
various relatives and ancestors. I think they are a goldmine. If they are your ancestors,
you will probably find the information interesting. It might give the background for John,
but it might not. I just recommend you buy it now, rather than wait until later when it
will cost so much more. Don't order the 8-page genealogical info package for $15, it
isn't quite worth it. I can explain more if you are interested.
