Hyou know of a link in my tree. My GGGGrandmother was Elizabeth Armes(Arms) born about
1826 (in Virginia, we think). Her oldest son was Simeon Buck Armes, b. 1844. He is
believed to have been born out of wedlock.
Elizabeth married three times that we know of: 1849 to Hezekiah Carman (one child: Minerva
Catherine, b 1850); Hezekiah was shot and killed in 1850, supposedly in a dispute over a
fence. In the 1850 Census for Breckinridge County, KY, Elizabeth, Simeon and Catherine
were living with Hezekiah’s parents. In 1854 Elizabeth married John J. Nevitt; they had
five children and he was killed in the Civil War. In 1871, Elizabeth married James M.
Quiggins.
In the 1860 Breckinridge County Census, Simeon was living at dwelling No. 537: [Josiah
Arms, 72 M, Farmer, 500, 150 Va.; Sarah, 70 F, Va.; Simeon, 14 M, Ky; V.D., 22 M
Laborer, Ky (This would be Vivian D., Daniel Armes' son]
As a young adult he went to Davies County, Indiana, and was apparently a driver of a
stagecoach delivering mail.
He served in the Kentucky infantry during the Civil War, married Anneliza Meek of Warren
County, KY;with whom he had six children (James Buck, William McHenry “Henry,” George,
Charlie, Jessie and Minnie. After Anneliza died Simeon married Elvina Thurman.
Following his marriage to Anneliza, the couple lived in Montgomery County, TN.
I have not been able to find Elizabeth’s parents. The family’s assumption was that she was
an Armes. As an old woman she was called “Granny Armes,” despite the Carman, Nevitt and
Quiggins surnames she had acquired later.
I have felt that there was perhaps a family connection in Davies County that drew Simeon
there.
Does any of this tie into any of your Armes findings?
