"MEXICAN WAR SOLDIER DEAD. HENRY KELLER FIGHTS LAST BATTLE AND PASSES TO HIS REWARD.
Henry KELLER, a soldier in the Mexican war and one of the best known citizens of Bogard
township, died at his home five miles south of Odon at the age of eighty-five years, seven
months and four days. He had been in failing health for sometime due to his age.
Mr. KELLER was born December 21, 1824. He was married to Malinda CHESTNUT in 1850 and
they were companions through life for sixty years, she having died about five months ago.
Eight children were born to them, six of whom are living. They are Phoebe E. MCCALL,
Hettie A., Phelix N., James M., Emma J. SCOTT and Thomas H. The two who are dead are Mary
E. WADE and William J. Besides the six children he leaves twenty-five grand-children and
ten great grand-children.
Mr. KELLER was the only survivor of the Mexican war in this part of the county. He
marched from Vera Cruz to the City of Mexico and was with the army when the city
surrendered. He came to Daviess county fifty-five years ago and has lived in this
neighborhood ever since, where he will be missed by many friends and acquaintances.
The funeral services were held at Concord church Wednesday morning at ten o'clock.
Rev. W. B. Morris of the Odon Christian church preached the funeral sermon. Burial at
Tolbert Chapel."
