It's a disgrace. The county is looking at moving or building to a
different
location. The current one is dilapidated and ran down. All the
while, the records and artifacts are still inside. I wonder if the families
of those who donated items, would be happy with the condition and the
counties efforts............I know I'm not.
Like most counties, funding is the issue. Daviess County officials seem
more
interested in spending the money on patching potholes, than spending
any money whatsoever preserving the history and artifacts of the county and
their ancestors.
There are grants they could apply for, and donations they could search
for, but
someone has to take the bull by the horns.
Fixing roads gives instant gratification, and secures more votes. Most
voters
aren't interested in their heritage. That's why I'd never make a
good politician. Sometimes, you need to do what's right, not pander to
voters. A recent poll in the local paper asked, what to do with lottery
funds for the county, fix roads or build a new museum. Over 70% voted to
fix roads.
Well, they don't need to "build" a new museum. Purchase one of the many
buildings where businesses have left, invest funds to preserve the items, re
activate the Historical Society (which must be dormant, as I never see or
hear anything about it), and hire one or two full time people to run the
museum. Even when the museum was open, you had to call to get in, and had
to dig through boxes yourself. There is so much there, if the time was
spent to organize the items, document them, etc.
Just my two cents. (you can see I'm a bit steemed at them)
Great Letter. Martin Co. is in the same boat
with you.
