Right now, they probably have no clue that this
stuff is so important to their ancestry!
Last time I was at the "museum" there wasn't as much genealogical as I had
hoped. A file cabinet of newspaper clippings...the rooms were sort of organized
into a school room, etc. But the biggest problem is that it looked like
everyone in the county had dumped the "memorabilia"...and just cleaned out
their
attics. Probably 20% of the stuff would make a better display. It's an
overwhelming amount of stuff and way too much for the location..not to mention that
much of it may not all have real historical value.
Huge job. And how do you get rid of donated stuff? Big problem.
On the other hand, the Carnegie library downtown Washington is wonderful.
There are many private collections of information neatly categorized.
Everyone be sure to understand that neither the Museum or the library has the
primary source materials from the courthouse. They are still there...and
have been microfilmed as well.
