Oscar Hackler, Plainville Man Dies at Franklin
Washington, Indiana DAILY TIMES, May 22, 1963
Oscar Perry Hackler, 84 year old native of Daviess County died at 8:05 a.m. today at the
Masonic Home Hospital in Franklin, Indiana, where he had made his home for the past five
years. He had been ill only a few weeks and was seriously ill for a week.
"Oscar" as he insisted his friends call him, was born near Epsom March 1, 1879,
the son of William M. and Nancy Jane Myers Hackler. He married Agnes Hickey on August 25,
1900 and she preceded him in death May 23, 1929.
He was a member of the Plainville Methodist Church, Plainville F. & A.M. 678;
Washington Council 67, R & S.M.; Washington Chapter 92 R & A.M.; Washington
Commandery 33; Knights Templar; Hadi temple of Evansville, and was a charter member of the
Plainville Lions Club.
Oscar was a born entertainer, and never passed up an opportunity to pull a harmless joke
on a friend. He operated a novelty shop on Plainville for many years.
About four years ago, he wrote the story of his life. He titled it "80 Years of
Life", and the date on the flyleaf was March 1, 1959, his 80th birthday. Excerpts
from the book, which he sent to the DAILY TIMES, reveal Oscar's feelings toward life
in general. Here are a few of the opening paragraphs:
"Now my father wasn't born in a log cabin, but he and my mother moved into one as
soon as they could afford one so that I could be born in a log cabin. And when I was born
near Epsom, Indiana, on March 1, 1879, I had nothing to say about where I was born, nor
any choice in the selection of my parents; so as I see it makes me at best, an accident of
birth.
Just one of God's children regardless - just one of 178 million ants; and at 80
years, I have been lucky enough to keep out of the way and I haven't been stepped on
yet. I have always refused to take myself or the world too seriously.
