Steve,
Thank you for the suggestions. I haven't tried that Library yet.
Interesting that you should spell Yates as Yeats, I have noticed that
spelling in some of the census. Drives me crazy trying to keep the Yates
and Gates separated when I know nothing about either! We received marriage
license and applications not too long ago so, haven't had these names long.
Since the children are not with their parents, I have spent months reading
census, page by page.
Thank you so much for the name of the book, it will give me some history of
the family.
Janis

Janis,
I saw your note. The Washington Indiana Library has
newspapers on microfilm, Im sure they could help you
possibly with obits. Also The Book, Daviess County
Indiana History,Vol #1, P.308-309 by L.Rex Myers, has
information on Joseph Patterson b. 15 Mar 1793
Washington Co Ky. They came to Daviess Co Indiana in
1818. It says that they had 12 children. Mary, a
daughter married John Yates (Yeates) on 11 Jan 1857.
Joseph and Rosanna's parents were part of a group of
60 families from Maryland, called themselves the
Maryland league, that settled in Washington co Ky.
Some of the families later came to Daviess and Martin
Co. Indiana. They started St. Mary's church in Daviess
and St. Rose church in Martin. There is more info,
this is just a snapshot of it, thought it may help
you, but it looks like you may already know all of
this.

I take it that there is no death index for Daviess
County before 1900. I
have tried the Health Dept. with no luck. The
Daviess Co. Genealogical
Society seems to have closed their doors. My mail
was returned. I have yet
to hear from the Carnegie Library on my requests.
Does anyone out there
have any more ideas for me?
I am looking for the deaths of John Yates, born abt.
1829 KY and his wife
Mary Patterson born abt. 1835. Mary was the
daughter of Joseph and Rosanna
Tewell. John and Mary were married in 1857. Mary
and John had 2 children
that I have found, Joseph and Margaret, who by the
1870 census are living
with the Patterson's.
Joseph Yates marries Cordelia Summers in 1880. In
1900 census the children
are scattered around living in different homes. I
feel that these 2 people
died by 1895, youngest child born 1891 or 1892.
Any ideas out there, where should I look next?
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.
