Wow interesting about the will, (and sad) I would like to see more. If you have the will or get the court documents would you send them to me? I don't have a Thomas Hopkins, or a Julia. Were they married? Or could Julia be the children's grandmother? I'll have to look up those articles.
Yes, the family history includes the Hopkins. J. Bernard Cunningham, wrote a family history, published 1965 in Urbana, Illinois where he lived. The title is "The Cunningham Family of Daviess County, Indiana and Gough, Shircliff, Raney, and Hopkins Alliances" by J. B. Cunningha, Professor Emeritus, Univeristy of Illinois.
He and my grandmother were 1st cousins. I have most of it, but just recently discovered I don't have all the pages. I believe it must be the Hopkins portion I am missing. The only page I have including the Hopkins is a tree. There had to have been more, as his mother was Frances and he wrote this primarily for his children so you would think he would have included more about that side.
Not all the info Mike posted about the Cunningham's is correct. You will see I posted corrected info. I'd be happy to share more if you like.
According to J. B., his mother Frances died the date you have. His father, Frank, married 2nd, 29 Apr 1902 to Catherine Effa Smith and they had 4 more children Glenn, Ralph, Catherine and George Francis. Frank died suddenly, 07 Sep 1921, on the family farm near Loogootee after answering a phone call and returning to bed not feeling well. He was found by son Glenn. He and Catherine are buried at St. Mary's.
Marie was with Patrick Cunningham 1900, Marie was b. 16 Jul 1891 in Loogootee. (Frank was with his mother Julia, daug Eugenia and niece Mary Shircliff.Bernard and Carl are with their aunt Mary Cunningham Cavanaugh) She died in Los Angeles, CA 23 Jan 1982. There are a couple very interesting articles about her too, she ran away in 1909, and was gone the whole summer. Smart girl, she was in Illinois and subscribed to the "Sentinel" to keep tabs on what was going on at home!
Marie actually had two children, daughter Ruth Spayd b. 07 Aug 1914 St. Louis, MO d. 12 Feb 1915 Cincinnati, OH. I have her death cert.
J. B. and Elizabeth had two sons David F. and Thomas P. and 7 grandchildren.
Carl must be the Charles you noted. Carl was b. 03 Apr 1895 in Loogootee, he died 10 Feb 1937 in CA. He was a doctor. His two children are Robert b. 1931 and Joyce b. 01 Apr 1933. I have more on his children and grandchildren as well.
Euegenia was born 28 Feb 1897. I know she and Samuel lived in Stockton, CA

Hi,
Someone posted I think that Raphael Ash was born in Kentucky?
I am researching the family of Charles Ash who married Gracy (mnu). They were both supposedly born in Maryland and came to KY with the Catholic group of settlers that went there. Charles died abt 1820 in KY. I do not know who his parents were or if he had any brothers or sisters.
I have that they had 2 daughters, sisters who married 2 brothers
Catherine who married Phillip Strange April 27, 1797 in Nelson County,KY
Milly who married Ignatius Strange May 08, 1798 in Nelson County KY. They immigrated to Martin County Indiana.Their son Ignatius Strange Jr.married Margaret Ash in Martin County Indiana in 1837.
Any links between these folks and other Ash families people are researching?
My Charles Ash is one of my brick walls!!

Raphael Ash b. abt 1817
James A. Ash b. abt 1822
Thomas Ash b. 16 Nov 1823
Francis 'Frank' Ash b. abt 1826

Does any one know if the Susan Ellenora Ash named here as the daughter of Raphael Ash is the Susan Ash who married John Hopkins on February 18, 1873?
She had 3 children who died at birth/within their first year. She herself died of childbirth February 21, 1885. I don't have a DOB for her...just abt 1850-52.
She is apparently buried in St.Mary's cemetery.
>>I have a Raphael Ash who married Mary Ann Seals 21 Nov 1840 in Daviess Co, IN. I show three children (maybe there are more): Susan Ellenora b. 1850, Mary Elizabeth b. 2 Sept 1852, and James Raphael Ash b. 1855. Raphael Ash was married first to Mary Jane Summers 25 Jan 1837 in Daviess Co.<<

Message Board Post:
Hi Lisa,
Yeah this is all wrong on the marriage date for Catherine Riley/Reilly. They got married
March 29, 1845. She died sometime in 1846 or 1847 after giving birth to their daughter Julia. Shortly afterward he married my gr gr grandmother Elizabeth Mahala Raney...they married October 16, 1847. If the bio is correct that he remarried 4 months after his 1st wife died, Catherine Riley Hopkins died in June or July of 1847.
Patrick and Elizabeth's first children were twins John and Peter born April 07, 1849. Peter died shortly after he was born.
This lines up with the 1850 census which has Julia as age 4 and John as 1.
John was my great grandfather. He married 1)Susan Ash and my great grandmother 2)Mary Ellen Strange. He died September 29, 1933.
The 1886 bio is off on his children, seeming to indicate that children who had died were still alive when it was written. I have that Patrick and Elizabeth had 14 children, 11 of whom survived to adulthood. Peter,Henry and Julian died in childhood. (maybe the 15 includes his daughter Julia as well?). His wife Elizabeth was also dead by the publication of this bio - she died November 27, 1881.
That Patrick was born in Longford County is what is on his headstone in St Mary's cemetary and the story that has come down in my family. Hopkins is a rare name in Ireland and is only really found in any numbers in that part of Ireland. In the part of Longford County, Ireland where most of the Hopkins always have and still reside(from the 1659 census to the present day) one of the other most common family names is Scally (Skelly). The parish there- St Mary's- burned down at some point so no records still exist from the time period when Patrick was born (? 1820-25) but other records make pretty strong circumstantial evidence that this is where he came from. The name in Gaelic is McObicin, anglicized to Hopkins....say it fast and you can heard it!
In the 1900 census he says that he is 75 and he came here from Ireland in 1836 - which matches with the story that he was a boy when he came here. Supposedly there was already family in the US who came before him but I have never found them. When I discovered that there were many Daviess County families from Longford County it made sense to me that he went there.
I lived in a neighboring Irish County- Cavan- for awhile. I was able to spend time with Longford Hopkins, some of whom bore a very striking resemblance to members of our Hopkins family. One of them could have been my grandfather's twin! I have a portrait of Patrick Hopkins - a drawing- in a box somewhere.
I haven't found any records for him in PA,MD,KY or OH. That doesn't mean he wasn't there...I just haven't found him in any of those places and until I do I am wary of buying the story in the bio as gospel.
His last survivng granddaughter,Monica Spalding (a nun- Sister Rose)- daughter of Rose Emma Hopkins Spalding died several years ago. She told me that Patrick was afraid of horses and wouldn't ride one or even ride in a wagon. He walked everywhere....including walking his cattle to Louisville to sell them every year. I don't know what kind of "team he drove" as per the Bio but if it was horses there must have been some kind of accident. Most poor Irish families did not own horses so most did not know how to ride one before coming here. Another mystery.
Where did the info that he came from Galway come from?
Elizabeth
>>I also have this bio, certainly the marriage info is incorrect as Catherine's daughter Julia was 4 years old on the 1850 census with step-mother Elizabeth Raney and Elizabeth's eldest child John Hopkins who is listed as 1. I suspect Catherine died 1848-1849 and married closer to 1845.
Interesting, I have Patrick born Co. Galway, Ireland, but I've no proof of it.<<

Hi,
Was this a family history that includes the Hopkins?
I have Frances Agnes
Hopkins Cunningham's death as January 26, 1899.
Who were Frank Cunnigham's parents?
Where were the Cunnighams from in Ireland? Longford County?
In the 1900 Census Frank and Frances's daughter Marie, age 8 is listed as living with her grandfather Patrick Hopkins and her aunts Katie and Rose Hopkins.
In January 1904 Patrick Hopkins died making a bequest in his will to the children of his daughter Frances Cunningham (he does not name them).Later that year grandchildren Marie,Bernard and Charles Cunningham join in with their uncle Thomas Hopkins and Aunts Julia and Lizzie to have their grandfather's will set aside. There were 2 lawsuits making all kinds of claims that James, Katie, Rose and others had threatened/coerced/cojoled Patrick into leaving them less than they thought they were entitled to. I just found this out from reading old newspapers...quite the news in a small town....the allegations were pretty bad...what the headline described as 'sensational complaints". I never heard a word about this from anyone in the family. My great grandfather John Hopkins was executor of the will.It happened when my grandfather, his youngest was a year old.
I'm going to write for the court documents.....
Otherwise this is all I have on Frank and Frances Hopkins Cunnigham's children:
Marie 1891 married 1) Sylvan Spayd 2) Chas Albright 1 child
J. Bernard 1893 married Elizabeth Meyer
Carl 1895-1937 married Lorene Armstrong 2 children
Eugenia 1897 married Samuel Hoffer no children

Thank you for this.
Not sure but I am guessing that this daughter Frances A.went by her middle name "Ada" and this is how she is identified on the census and in my family notes. His brother John also named a girl named Ada.Several of his children went by their middle names. Ada isn't a family name that I know of but was a popular girls name in the late 19th century.
Leo is the only one of these children named/left money in his grandfather/left money Patrick Hopkins will. His father James is also named.

Yes. Michael and Julianna Shircliff are my gg-grandparents, their son Andrew James and Mary Adeline Padgett are my great-grandparents.
You have most of it right but some errors.
Mary E. Cunningham married Owen Cavanaugh 11 Apr 1864, they had 10 children.
I can tell you Patrick Joseph was married at least 3 times and I had heard family stories it was more like 5 times. Laura is Laura Ann Padgett married him 09 Jan 1872 in Martin Co. He married Catherine M. Madden 07 May 1901 also in Martin Co. I had a note to investigate Margaret Coran. I did find a Daviess Co. rec 07 Jan 1864 where she is transcribed as Margaret Horan, but wasn't sure.
Elizabeth Ann was known as Lydia died 30 Apr 1933 in Martin Co. She and Thomas Addison Seal had 7 children that I know of. (Thomas was Andrew's wife Adeline Padgett's uncle)
Louis F. Cunningham was b. 23 Jan 1857 Martin Co. IN and d. 25 May 1902 in Loogootee. He was murdered during a bar fight. Married Maude M. Parks 03 Jan 1900 and only had one daughter Doris Marie. Never heard of Sarah Carter?? I've been told he also married Mary Alice Brown, but I think that too is a different Louis Cunningham as I believe she had children and I know Doris was Louis' only child. Doris was only 1 or 2 when she lost both parents. She first went to live with her aunt Mary and Owen Cavanaugh after Louis died and Mary died 1910 when Doris was only 9. My aunts and uncles were very close to her.
Michael Bernard was born Aug 1859, married Margaret "Maggie" Kennedy 27 Spe 1887. They had one daughter Mary Beatrice. I still haven't been able to find his death rec.
John A. was b. Aug 1861 and married Anna Mary Livers 10 Oct 1882 and had 10 children. Don't know who John M. and Margaret Myers are but not this family.
Finally Francis "Frank" Joseph b. Mar 1966 d. 07 Sep 1921 on the family farm near Loogootee. He married first Frances Hopkins 07 Oct 1890 and had 4 children Marie Rose, Joseph Bernard, Carl and Eugenia. After Frances died he married Catherine Effa Smith 26 Apr 1902 and they had 4 children Glenn, Ralph, Catherine and George Francis.
Frank and Frances son, known as Bernard and/or J. B., published a family history in Urbana, Champaign, IL where he was a professor. He recalled his grandmother Julianna Shircliff living with them when he was growing up. My granmother was very close to most of her cousins and my dad and J.B. knew each other and I have some photos of many of them.
I have lots more if you're interested
