I've pulled up what I have on James Handley Clark and on 16 messages containing his wife and family, I couldn't find any naming Agustin in any way. He sure was an elusive character wasn't he?

Despite all my efforts, and others, I don't think there is any good information on Augustin. I think his background was intentionally vague because the nature of his birth was questionable. For that reason I can't trace my own father who has used different namesfrom his birth to his death.

Here is something I found in a booklet published by St Peter's church in Montgomery. "Alva Clark was the grandson of James Clark, a relative of George Rogers Clark. Alva and Suzanna are buried in St. Peter's Cemetery. Alva, 1st settler in Clark Station, appointed the first postmaster (1854). He operated a hotel in N.E. part of town, along the railroad. He was the great-grandfather of Forrest (Keck) Lavely. His daughter Phoebe, married George Nolan, a Civil War veteran. George Nolan, as a young man, came from Kentucky and landed at the Houghton Ferry in Martin County. He worked for the Houghton family until he joined the Civil War. He saved the life of Major Housghton by carrying him from the battlefiedl after being wounded. Later at a G.A.R. meeting held in Loogootee, Mr. Houghton recalled the incident and credited George Nolan with saving his life. Forrect (Keck) Lavely's father, Henry, also fought in the Civil War. He was 20 some years older than Forrest's mothe!

In case some of the searchers don't have this obit:
Alvah Clark, one of the oldest residents of Daviess County, died at his home in Cannelburg Frida night at 8:15. His death was due to ailments incident to old age. For some years he has been in bad health.
The deceased was born October 14, 1814, in Hamilton county, Ohio. He came to Daviess county with his parents in 1821 and settled in Washington township on the Portersville road on what is known as the James Williams farm. The family remained on this farm several years and went to Martin county near Mr. Pleasant; thence moved to Barr township, this county, whre the deceased has lived for sixty yeears.
He was married in 1837 to Susannah Wedding, who died about a year ago after bearing him seven children, four of whom survive. The names are Lloyd Clark and Mrs. Mary Cassidy of Montgomery, and Mrs.Louisa Sharum and Phoebe Nolan of Cannelburg. In faith the deceased was a Catholic, having united with that church forty years ago. Politically he was a Whig up to 1856...since that time he has been a democrat. In 1857 he was appointed postmaster of BlackOak Ridge, an office which he held for twenty years. In 1853 he engaged in the mercantile business andcontinued at it several years. The remainder of his life he spent upon the farm. The deceased was a good citizen and was a spendid type of the early pioneers of Daviess county. The funeral services will take place at St. Peter's church Montgomery, at 10 o'clock Monday morning, after which the remains will be intereed in the Catholic cemertery by the side of his wife.

I know missing records are not uncommon. My dad served in the Navy (I have apicture of him in uniform) but the Dept of Records has no info on him at all. Also, my grandfather on my Dad;s side deserted his family and was declared legally dead. I have searched every file I can think of but even the courthouse workers can't help me find the papers. Very frustrating.

Thanks for all your effort Mary. I keep trying but I am more and more convinced that someone may have wanted to cover up the real parents. An example of that is that my father was adopted and his mother's father was a probate judge who got rid of all the records of my father's parentage. The man who raised my dad may have been his real father because his step-mother hated his guts and tried to kill him. Dad ran away at 15 and never went back. The step mother was put in an insane asylum in Kansas and died there. In Colorado mountains, where my dad was born, they didn't keep many records of births or deaths in the early 1900s. In WWII my father wasn't drafted or could enlist bc of having no records.

The question, i think, was how and why was he in Ohio apparently with a pregnant wife, or woman, when he lived miles away in Virginia? I don't think he had any family there and nobody seems to have any record of Alva's mother's family. Is there a record of her any where?
