The library is the best place to go..they have cemetery books, and newspapers on microfilm..they have the basics of what you need..then go to the court house for land and will records..but they don't offer to help you with anything.

If you choose to go to the courthouse a helpful hint would be to have as
close to exact dates as you can for who you are wanting to find records for.
I went in once with very little information and had a hard time finding
things. I used genealogy.com and ancestry.com to find the people I was
researching, got better dates and was able to find the records I needed.
There is a charge for getting copies of birth and death certificates (I
believe it is $5). The ladies there are very helpful, as are the ladies at
the library.

Jennifer the St. Mary records have been filmed by the Latter Day Saints and
you can get them thru the LDS Libraries.

In early August I will be spending a day in Washington Indiana to do some
genealogical research. I have had no luck locating a genealogical society
for Daviess County. Any suggestions on where to begin researching? Should
I visit the Carnagie Library first or the Courthouse? Would a stop at the
Daviess county historical society be of any help to me.
I am researching Jonathan Lents b: abt 1827 KY or IN, m: Susan Brewer 1st,
2nd Malissa Lents, d in Clay County Illinois (I have this information
already); S.C. Melton b:abt 1822 Ky, m: Lucinda Bowling 18 Jan. 1844, 2nd
Mary J. Hollin Sharum, Daviess Co. D: before 1880. These families are
Catholic and are listed in the 1848 list of families of St. Mary's parish.
Would the library or the historical society possible have any books or
records of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Barr Twp. ie; Baptism, marriage,
death?
Thank you, Jennifer

Jennifer, I have found the librarians and information at the library to be wonderful as a first start. If you have time, the courthouse would be a second resource. I've made a couple of research stops myself.
Good Luck,
Nancy

My great-grandmother was Floria Chattin. My grandmother had family in Martin County, Dubois, Gibson, & Knox Counties in Indiana. Her father was William Sherman Chattin. Let me know if I can help.
