I'll do some looking.
It was spelled RINEY in Maryland, also in Washington Co, KY when my ggg grand, Jeremiah and Mary Joan Riney married about 1799.
He is named in the 1800 tax list in KY.
They are in Washington Co, KY in 1810 Census, and moved with their children, to Martin County, IN by about 1818, and spelled RANEY in the census there in 1820 and 1830. He died about 1840.
Martin County is next to Daviess County, IN (pronounced Davis) and there is a Washington, IN.
Several Riney's became Raney at this time. I assume the census takers did that, and possibly my ancestors couldn't spell in the 1700's. Don't know for sure. Maybe they had an Irish accent or another accent and Raney sounded like Riney.

Thankyou for all of that. I have most of the information because my Burris line married into the Winingers. Juliann was the daughter of Anderson and Sarah (Burris) VanWinkle. She married Jackson Wininger.(he died before 1866) I am thinking that Jackson was the son of Jacob Wininger and Julian Sullivan. But can't find the family in 1850. I think maybe both parents died. I also think that Samuel, Jackson and Eliza (married Benjamin Burris)Wininger are siblings. Trying to prove it is another story. Someone told me Samuel was son of Jacob and Juliann but didn't know where he got the information. Juliann Sullivan (married to Jacob Wininger) is also in my line. Sure does get tangled.
Thankyou for your help,
Barbara
