Shirley,
This information is from an index and abstract titled:
Abstract of Probate Records
1817-1850 Part 1
1850-1865 Part 2
Clerk's Office
Daviess Co., In
Compiled by Stella Bogner
(Probably compiled after 1930 and before 1950. Mrs. Bogner was an active genealogist and also active in the local DAR)
As she notes we had two court house fires before 1930, during the 1928 fire the court house was destroyed. However, many of the records were rescued from this fire. There were many records damaged and lost, but a great deal survives. So, the type of record(s) for each entry is not always clear. The actual records can be requested from the Daviess Co., Clerk's Office (812-254-8664). I do not know their procedure or charges.
Part 1.
Spalding, Ignatius, Exec. Julia A. Spalding. 27 July 1842
Book B, 268, Box 54.
Will dated 7 April 1842, filed 7 July 1842, Book C-60/63/68? (very difficult to read, must be Will book, but does not specify).
Exec - Julia A. Spalding.
Wit. - D. Fagains, Matthew Raney
Wife - Julia Ann
Sons - Valentine Spalding
John Spalding
Hillary Spalding
Did not find any Bowlings.

Robert this is a long shot for sure. I have L. Rex Myer's Daviess County History Vol, I & II. There are no Mathewson names but the Matteson name does appear in both volumes. A Wayne Matteson is listed in the acknowledgements of Volume I. If any of this is significant, check out the Daviess County Museum page as I believe he is the correct President of the Historical Society.
Daviess Co History volume II, by L. Rex Myers; carries a story of the 117th Regiment, on page 58 reads, "In April 1861, a man named Rice from Washington cut down the union flag at Mayesville which was on a flag pole in the Mayesville commons located in the northwest quarter of the RR tracks the current homesite of Tom Matteson."
My grandmother Minnie May Chapman 1879-1957 married Edward Clark on 15 Jan 1949. He was born 13 AUG 1876 Daviess, IN died 03 FEB 1968.
Edward first married Minnie A. Sheppard 07 NOV 1896 in Daviess IN. Their children were Bessie, Charles & Owen. Bessie Clark married Clayborn Matteson and they had a son Eugene. Eugene married Eileen Best. (Volume has picture).
cheers

Add me to the list of lookups! (What do you do in your spare time? ;-} ) The surnames I'm looking for are FOUST, DAMEWOOD, and STANDLEY. There shouldn't be many (if any).
Thanks,
Ruth

Thank you very much, Miss Libby.
I am looking for a will by Alexander Mathewson. (or Matheson or Mathison or ...) He supposedly emigrated from NC and settled in Daviess. He is not listed in the 1850 census. May have arrived as early as 1820.

Libby, would you see if there are any Cobb/Cobbs listed in the probate records? Appreciate it.
