"Death's Harvest --Skomp"
William Stewart Skomp, son of Isaac and Hanna (Stewart) Skomp, was born at Scotland, Indiana on April 6, 1861.
He was reared to manhood in the neighborhood where he was born, and under the influence of a Christian home. This early training greatly influenced his life. His greatest joy was serving his Master and mingling with God's people. He united with the M. E. Church at Newberry in December 1891, under the pastorate of Rev. L. B. Johson, later moving his membership to Prairie Chapel. He remained true to his faith throughout his life. When realized that his Master had called him he expressed his readiness to go, saying he would be glad to meet his mother and his God. On November 4, 1891 he was united in marriage to Elma M. Boyd. To this union were born two children, Cletus and Hope. On October 29, 1905, his wife died, leaving him the care of the two children. On April 3, 1907, he was again united in marriage to Zora Edwards. To this union were born four children, Austin, Geneva, Carl, and William Jr. He departed this life October 18, 1925, at the age of sixty-four years, six months!
and twelve days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, six children, two grandchildren, one sister Hannah J Terrell, of Bellflower, California; one brother, Fred C Skomp, of Tillamook, Oregon; and a half brother, Reason C Skomp, of Odon, and many other relatives also a host of friends whom he always held dear. In the passing of William Skomp, a home is left without a kind and loving husband, and the wise and helpful counsel of a father. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church at Lyons, Tuesday afternoon at 1;00 o'clock, with Rev. W. H. Thompson in charge, assisted by Rev. Watkins. Interment was in Walnut Hill Cemetery near Odon.
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to neighbors and friends for their aid and sympathy during the illness and after the death of our beloved husband and father. Mrs. William Skomp and Children.

In many respects she was worthy of initation. First in her devotion to her parents as a child to her husband as a wife and her children as a mother. to her God, in her fidelity to his service. Second, in her bright cheerful dispostion, which was a ray of sunshine to those with whom she mingled. The funeral services which were held at Good Hope church, conducted by Rev. Do you have information on Elijah Chapman who married Elizabeth Miller in Ohio? They later moved to Daviess Co.
Debra,
Thank you for the lists of cemeteries in Elmore Twp.
We visited Old Elnora and found Wm and Eliza Smallwood Carr years ago.
We are wondering who else of our ancestors might be buried in that old
cemetery. It isn't very large and not all graves are marked with upright
markers, Wm and Eliza's for one, only with funeral home markers. We would
like to place an upright marker on their graves. At the same time, we would
be interested in anyone else to whom we might be related and who might also
need an upright marker.
Any online help appreciated as we live on the Eastern Shore of VA - no
library with Indiana info and no LDS church or library.
Thanks for your help.

I was very glad to find this biography of the Thomas Meredith who married Elizabeth Ruggles, since someone researching our SC Merediths had said that Thomas Meredith, Jr., born in Fairfield Co., SC, had married Elizabeth Ruggles. We had thought that this must be incorrect, since, according to our information, Thomas, Jr. had never married, had never been in Indiana, and died in Franklin Co., MS. It is very helpful to find this biography of the other Thomas Meredith in Indiana to be able to settle this question of whether our Thomas had married Elizabeth Ruggles.
However, it is interesting to note that this Thomas Meredith was also born in South Carolina. I am wondering whether, though Goodspeed didn't include information on his county of birth in SC, his parents, or their location of origin before their arrival in South Carolina, someone else might have researched this. Our Merediths were Sabbatarian Baptists in SC and remained Baptists in MS, while these Indiana Baptists from SC were Methodists, which might (or might not) indicate that these two SC Meredith families were not related.

Hi, Darlene...
It is sometimes hard to unravel the postings from various bulletin
boards, so I am glad to see that you identified yourself, just as the
Carrs did.
I have been looking for a long time for the grave of John Ragle
[also spelled Ragel], born 1808, died January 1876. His brother Peter,
dob 1806, lived on a farm just east of Raglesville, about where the high
school used to be, and is buried in the Raglesville cem. John lived in
various places around the area, including Newberry, Loogootee, and
Raglesville. He seems to have been living with his daughter Mary, who
was married to Jacob Riley Dillon, near the end of his life. No one in
the extended Ragle family seems to know exactly where he was buried.
Peter Ragle was my 2x GGF, and my line goes Peter --> Alonzo -->
Horace --> Richard --> me. In direct answer to your question, I would
say I am looking for any Ragle names. Peter (dob 1806) had a son Peter,
who lived in Elnora. Peter Jr. died in Elnora. The date of his death
was Dec 19 1918. There are several official records of Peter Jr's death
that indicate he was buried in Raglesville cem. There is a headstone in
the Raglesville cem. for Peter Jr. but despite these records I don't
think it is associated with a grave, as the headstone was placed by
Peter Jr.s' grandson. So there may be a marked grave for Peter Jr. as
well in the Elnora area. Peter was married to Emma Gruver (Gruber) from
about 1874 on until her death in 1914, and so there may be a grave for
Emma Gruver as well, someplace in the Elnora area -- Peter Jr. was
supposedly running a "hotel" (boarding house?) in Elnora after 1900,
although I have never seen any description of this operation. He lost
his farm in one of the recessions before 1900 in Martin Co. (?)
I would be delighted if you have anything to contribute to this saga.

John,
There is a list from a book compiled by Barbara Hickey back in 1986,
I believe. There are several volumes to the book but I think the Old Elnora
Cemetery is in the first book. What names are you looking for?

In response to the Carr's query about old cemetery listings in/near
Elnora, I would like to ask a similar question. A decade ago, when I
visited the area, a lady in the convenience store in the village center
mentioned a very old cemetery out east of town. This was on a rutted
dirt road */which might have been/* CR 1500N. I note on the Delorme map
that there are two such cemeteries, both close to the intersection of
CR1500N and CR550E, about 1 1/4 mile east of the intersection of State
Routes 57 and 58 (Ellen St.) The one I visited, northwest of the 1500N &
550E intersection, was clearly long abandoned; more than half of the
headstones were down and in the brambles, and I could not read most of
them, as they were limestone. I did not even notice the other cemetery.
I would very much like to learn any information about these cemeteries
that anyone may know, including the listing that Saundra and John asked
about.
Thank you, listers!

I am trying to determine the parentage of Nancy Ann MASTERS, born about 1844 in Indiana or Illinois. She married John Benjamin BOYD, 6 Mar 1864, Daviess county, Indiana.
The Daviess county marriage book B, page 223 shows the marriage of John R. MASTERS and Susan A. COLDWELL, 8 September 1839. The 1850 census shows Susan MASTERS, apparently a widow with a daughter Nancy. Perhaps the Masters family moved to Illinois for a while, say 1843-1845 where two of her children were born; and then returned to Indiana by 1848 when her youngest was born.
The census also indicates Nancy Ann MASTERS may have had brothers named William, Richard and/or Francis. The 1850 and 1860 census schedules below fit my Nancy Ann MASTERS very well.
Inaccuracies are known to be in the census, and there is a problem here in that Nancy is shown as born in Illinois in one census and ten years later, she is born in Indiana. Also the Richard C. MASTERS in 1850 could very well be the Francis MASTERS in the 1860 census.
1840, Indiana, Daviess county, page 26, the newly married John MASTERS appears. Before 1850, the census named only the head of house; then people living in the household were listed by gender and age grouping; one male age 30-39; one female 15-19.
Possibly related, on the same 1840 census page is listed Elijah MASTERS; one male each in age groupings 5-9, 10-14, 50-59; one female each in age groupings 10-14, 40-49.
Also on the same 1840 census page is listed Luther MASTERS; only one person in the household, male 20-29.
1850, Indiana, Daviess county, Barr county, page 169, dwelling 1170; Susan MASTERS, 28, born Ia; Nancy, 7, born Ils; William G., 5, born Ils; Richard C., 2, born Ia.
1860, Indiana, Daviess county, Veale township, page 628, dwelling 126; Nancy MASTERS, age 17, born Indiana, a domestic servant in the household of Thomas HORRALL.
1860, Indiana, Daviess county, Barr township, page 771, dwelling 265; Francis MASTERS, age 12, born Indiana is shown in the household of Gabrel MOOTS.
