I am looking for data on William Buckles and Margaret Herrington. They purchased land in Daviess County in 1837.
They had 3 sons and a daughter and William died in 1843. Does anyone out there know about this pioneer family?
Saundra,
The Cunningham land there south of Elnora was owned by George Cunningham. His two eldest daughters lived there for several years after he and his wife Florence died. Now, I heard, his second-youngest daughter, I think that's Zoe, bought it for a summer home. I doubt if they let it out of the family. The farm used to be huge. George was the brother big on land. He was a school teacher, too. He and my grandfather, Jonathan, and third brother, David, were born on that land I told you about previously, south of the hwy. where the school is. The old Cunninghams came up from Clark Co., down by the river, into Daveiss 1837, bought public land on 1000 east out of Odon, and several families strung along that road for about a mile up to 1400 where the Old Bunkum Church was, still is with a cemetary, just a different name. The three boys parents were Henry Wilson Cunningham and Barbra Seneff. When David's last daughter died intestate about 20 years ago, they auctioned everyth!
ing off
of the land south of the hwy. where the three boys grew up. Best, biggest auction I have ever been to!!! If you want any more info, get back with me. Velma

Karen, Sorry to report that I know nothing about Nelson's wife's family other than her name. I do plan to order up Nelson's Civil War records next time I place an order with the National Archives and will let you know if any reference is made re them in those. I doubt that any data would be in those files, however. My deep mystery is what ever happened to Nelson's brother, Hiram, who left his wife and kids around 1884ish and disappeared. Have any ideas? "DAVID SIMPKINS TAKEN BY DEATH, ILL ONE WEEK. SUFFERED BROKEN HIP IN FALL AT HOME ON AUGUST 16TH.
Elnora, Ind., Aug. 23. - David SIMPKINS, 80, a lifelong resident of Elnora and vicinity died Saturday night at 8:30 o'clock at the Linton hospital, following a week's illness, which resulted from a fall at his home on August 16th, in which he suffered a broken hip. It was thought that a stroke of paralysis probably caused the aged man to fall heavily on the concrete porch at his home.
Born in Daviess county on July 7, 1856 {1857}, the deceased spent all his life in the Elnora community, and was widely known there. He married Lyda ELMORE 54 years ago, and she died six weeks ago after a brief illness.
One son, Oscar SIMPKINS, resides in Lafayette, Ind., and a step-daughter, Mrs. Steve STALCUP {Stella ELMORE}, lives in Linton. There are two first cousins also surviving, Mrs. George COURTNEY of Elnora, and Gideon JOHNSON of Newberry. Mr. Simpkins was the last of a family of five children. He was a member of the Elnora Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family home in Elnora, with Rev. Jeff Slimp of Yorktown officiating. Interment was made in the Old Cemetery. Huette Poindexter & Sons had charge of the funeral."

"LIDA SIMPKINS TAKEN BY DEATH IN ELNORA HOME. AGED CITIZEN WILL BE BURIED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.
Elnora, Ind., June 22 - Mrs. Lida SIMPKINS, 81, one of Elnora's oldest and best known citizens, died at 11:50 o'clock Monday night, following many months illness of complications.
Mrs. SIMPKINS was born near Orleans on October 30, 1854, being a daughter of early residents of that community. She came to Daviess county as a child, and spent the remainder of her life in and around Elmore township, with the exception of a few years in Linton with her daughter, Mrs. Steve STALCUP {Stella ELMORE}.
At the age of 20 she married Abraham ELMORE, and three children were born to the union, two dying in infancy. The one surviving child is Mrs. STALCUP at Linton. Following her husband's death, she married David G. SIMPKINS, and to this union one son, Oscar SIMPKINS, was born. He now lives in Lafayette. Surviving also are the husband and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth BYNUM of Elnora, and Mrs. Ella YAZEL of Terre Haute, and a grandson, Elmore STALCUP of Peoria, Ill.
Mrs. SIMPKINS was a member of the Elnora Church of Christ, and until failing health prevented was active in the church affairs there.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 o'clock at the home in Elnora, with interment following in the Old City Cemetery. Huette Poindexter & Sons will have charge of the funeral. Rev. Jess Slimp, of Yorktown, formerly of Elnora, will conduct the funeral services."

{John} HUNTER and {Joseph} CLENDENING, indicted for the murder of Hi WYKOFF and imprisoned in the county jail, attempted to escape by cutting their way through the floor of their cells on Sunday and Monday. They were in separate cells at first. HUNTER was at first discovered making the attempt, and he was removed to CLENDENING's cell, where a similar attempt was made and again discovered. The jail, being considered insecure, the prisoners were, by telegraphic order of Judge MALLOTT, removed to the Martin county jail."

"MURDERED AT A DANCE.
HI WYKOFF SHOT THROUGH THE HEART - - ARREST OF HIS ALLEGED MURDERER AND ACCOMPLICE.
At a dance at a farm house in Steele township, about 8 miles northwest of this city, on last Saturday night, about 8 o'clock, Hi WYKOFF was shot through the heart and instantly killed. The deceased was a young farmer, about 21 years of age, youngest son of the late Wilson WYKOFF, and a brother-in-law of Mr. Dan MAHONY of this city.
The house at which the dance was given was occupied by a tenant named Wm. CUMMINGS. The dance was progressing and a disturbance arose between some of the boys who evidently expected a "racket" and had come prepared with whisky and pistols to put down any "fuss". There seems to have been some jealousy between some of the boys who lived in the immediate neighborhood of the dance and young WYKOFF, who was regarded by them as a "town boy". During the evening WYKOFF and others went out to look after their horses. As they returned to the house pistols were fired from the door, a ball striking WYKOFF, who was standing about five steps from the door. The ball struck the fourth rib, passed between the fourth and fifth ribs, through the center of the heart and imbedded itself in the lungs, killing WYKOFF instantly. The ball was a small one but tore a large hole. The dance was broken up and the parties who were engaged in the shooting fled. Coroner GRACE's inquest resulted in a!
verdict in accordance with the above facts.
Two men engaged in the affair, Jno. HUNTER and Joe CLENDIN, were arrested Wednesday three miles on the other side of Edwardsport, brought to this city and lodged in jail. It is charged that the ball that killed WYKOFF fits HUNTER's pistol, which is of caliber 22 short. CLENDIN's pistol is of 32 caliber. The two men were arrested by James WYKOFF and a man named REDYARD.
A grand jury will meet today to investigate the affair, and there is likely to be a speedy trial. The two men arrested claim that the shooting was done in self-defense, that WYKOFF had been shooting at them from the outside.
Mr. O'NEALL has been employed to assist prosecutor BURKE and MESSRS. BYNUM & PADGETT have been retained for the defense."

Our grandfather John Isaac Carr 1876-1937 owned and lived on the farm next
to the Cunninghams. They actually shared one oil well marked
"Carr-Cunningham". We would be most interested in any information on the
Cunningham family as we are Carr researchers in Daviess and earlier in
Jackson Co IN.

I know that right across the road from the house was this oil pump, up-down,
up-down. The Cunningham land owned mutually by the three brothers, and
their mother as widow of Henry Wilson, was just south of where the current
school is there on the highway. But don't remember any wells on that land.
When the last heir died intestate, there was a court session where one side
wanted to know if they could keep the mineral rights. My old Cunninghams
who lived about a mile east of Odon, all down that north/south road there
was oil. Still pumping about 10 years ago when I was last there.
