Depends on the time period you are searching.
Census records are the best bet for certain periods (pre-1900). You don't
find those there unless the library has an ancestry.com subscription. (Any
good-sized LDS Family History Center should have the same access to ancestry.com
for free).
Births and death records began later. Courthouse has wills and marriages.
You can get pre-1850 marriages online, but for marriages after that going
there is the solution. However, early records (when I was there) were in a
jumble on a shelf in a closet.
The Carnegie Library has a wonderful collection of obituaries, local family
histories and other data. It is well organized.

Frank Arford was my great-grandfather. While I have good information about him, this obituary gives me great background information that I did not know. And I now know for sure that he is buried at Pleasant Hill Church. I will try to locate the church & the associated cemetery when I visit Odon this spring.

"DEATH CLAIMS MADISON MAN. JOSEPH CHRISTENBERRY DIED WEDNESDAY MORNING AT HOME NORTHWEST OF THIS CITY.
Joseph Christenberry, well known throughout the community, died at his home northwest of this city, last Wednesday after an extended illness.
Mr. Christenberry was born in Greene county in 1859 but had been a resident of this community for the past thirty years. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Moore and to this union five children were born, all of whom survive. These are Mrs. George Long of Elnora, William Christenberry of Pana, Illinois, Mrs. Elmer Edwards of Pawnee, Illinois, and Arla Christenberry and Hazel Christenberry of Indianapolis. The wife and mother of these children died many years ago. In 1922 Mr. Christenberry was again married to Julia Boyd who survives.
He was a member of the United Brethren church at Mud Pike and was a respected resident of the community in which he lived.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock at Mud Pike with Rev. Youngblood in charge. Burial was made in Walnut Hill."

George Oliver Long, 62, of Elnora, route one, died suddenly at his home Sunday morning at 7:15 of a heart attack. He had been stricken only a few hours before his death.
A native and life long resident of the Elnora community, Mr. Long was engaged in farming. He was born August 13, 1882, the son of George and Mary (Strange) Long. He married Tena M. Christenberry on February 6, 1905, who survives him together with the following children:
Ernest, Walter and Randolph of Odon, Sgt. Oral Long with the U. S. army in Germany, Cpl. Cleatus Long of Camp Beale, Calif., and Mrs. Velma Ferguson of Montgomery. A son and daughter preceded him in death.
Half sisters are Mrs. Sarah Faith of Sandborn and Mrs. Etta Carr of Linton. Three half brothers and one half sister preceded him in death. There are 16 grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete as to time, but the services will be held at the Mud Pike church with burial in Fairview cemetery. Rev. Hawkins will be in charge. Friends may call at the Poindexter and Wampler Funeral Home in Sandborn."

Thomas Lawrence Swayze, a young farmer, who lived north of Odon, near Mud Pike, died Monday of typhoid fever after a short illness of two weeks. He had been married only three weeks to Coy Bean, when death claimed him.
Mr. Swayze was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Swayze, ad was born November 9, 1884, being 22 years, 10 months and 14 days of age at his death.
When twelve year of age he became a member of the United Brethren church at Mud Pike and was a faithful worker. He was a young man of high moral standard and was respected by all who enjoyed his acquaintance.
He leaves a young wife, a father, who is in very ill health, a mother, four brothers and four sisters.
The funeral services were conducted at 1:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Mud Pike, by Rev. W. E. Snyder, of this place. Burial in Walnut Hill cemetery."

She was born on May 26, 1865, at Bramble and was a daughter of Thomas Jones. She was married to Richard Swayze in 1884 but he preceded her in death.

Odon, Ind., April 20. - Stephen Weathers, 59, farmer living just west of the Old Settlers grounds here, died at 7:45 o'clock Sunday evening, after a lingering illness of several months. Bright's Disease was given as the cause of his death and he had been bedfast for the past two weeks.
Mr. Weathers was a son of Hiram and Cynthia (Slinkard) Weathers and spent most of his life in Mud Pike community between Odon and Elnora, less than a year ago moved to this community. He married Maude Pettitt 32 years ago, and she survives with four of the five children born to this union.
The surviving children are Margaret Weathers of Indianapolis, Albert, Cynthia and Vertis Weathers at home. A sister, Miss Stella Weathers, resides in Greeley, Colo., and a half-sister, Mrs. Bessie Kelly, live in Indianapolis.
Funeral services are to be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Odon Christian church, with Rev. Buchanan officiating, and interment following in the Newberry Cemetery. W. H. Tomey will have charge of the funeral."

"MR. BAIRD DEAD. AN AGED RESIDENT CALLED TO THE GREAT BEYOND.
William H. Baird, an aged resident, died Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home on Spring street. Mr. Baird had not been feeling well for some time, but he did not think he was ill enough to need the services of a physician, until about two weeks ago. His death was caused by a complication of diseases. He was well advanced in years, and was debilitated. He also suffered from a stroke of paralysis and heart trouble. Mr. Baird was born in this state in 1834, being over 68 years of age at his death. He was a soldier in the civil war, a Republican in politics and a member of the M. E. church.
The deceased leaves a wife, a daughter, Mrs. John Stewart of Bedford, and fours sons, William of St. Louis, and John, James, and Richard of this place.

"JOHN SMILEY DEAD. A GOOD CITIZEN PASSED AWAY - SKETCH OF HIS LIFE.
John Smiley, one of the aged citizens of this place, died shortly after twelve o'clock, Thursday night of cancer of the stomach. Mr. Smiley had for many years been suffering with stomach trouble but until this spring he was able to continue his work. This spring the trouble developed into cancer, and he has been confined to his home the greater part of the time. For the last ten days he was very ill, and his death was expected almost every day. He bore his suffering which at times was intense, with great fortitude.
John Smiley was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, December 27, 1832, being at the time of his death 69 years 6 months and 21 days of age. His first marriage was to Jane Kohr. To this union three children were born, Belden D., Mrs. Jas. Cunningham and Cora. Cora died in 1876. His wife died in 1868, and a year later he moved from Ohio to this place where he has since resided. After moving here, he married Mary Smith. To this union was born one child, Ed, who lives in St. Louis.
Besides his wife and children mentioned above, he has several brothers and sisters. R. B. Smiley of Kan., Surveyor Thos. Smiley of Washington, Jas. Smiley, Miss N. J. Smiley, Mrs. R. A. Flood, Susan Itskin and Kizzie Hostettler of Ohio. His brother Marshal, died in Ohio a month ago.
Mr. Smiley was a harness maker by trade, and for several years conducted a harness shop at this place. Of late years he has been farming. He was a Democrat in politics and while not a church member, was a believer in Christianity, and was a good man. He was fair in all his dealings, and had a large circle of friends.
The funeral services will be conducted this (Saturday) morning at the residence at nine o'clock. Burial at Walnut Hill."
