"WILLIAM D. CLINTON
The subject of this sketch was the oldest son of Henry and Delpha Clinton; was born in Orange county, Ind., March 22, 1833, with his parents came to this county in 1842 where he has since resided until his death January 7, 1906. On Nov. 19, 1837 he was married to Elizabeth Flinn; to this union were born eight children, three boys and five girls. His wife and two daughters, Mrs. Jane Ketchem, who resides with her mother, and Mrs. Thos. Nugent of Washington, ten grand-children and two great grand-children survive. In his father's family were eight children, two of whom, Samuel, of Plainville and Henry, of Raglesville survive.
On Easter Sunday 1868 he with his two brothers above named were baptized into fellowship of Baptist by Rev. D. Manly. He was one of the consistent members of Friendship Baptist church in which he held membership till death.
He was engaged in farming and was quite successful; having a valuable estate; was able to afford the necessaries and comforts for his family giving them opportunities for making of themselves useful and honored members of society.
He had a large part in the development of this country and took an active interest in churches, schools and all things making for the good of the community. He filled a large place in the esteem of his fellow citizens who honored him and trusted him, placing him in positions of trust.
On his father's side he was of Irish descent, his father being born at sea as his parents were emigrating from Ireland to America. His mother was from Pennsylvania and of German descent. These elements with purely American teaching gave him strong character, faithful and true to his friends and industrious and frugal in habits of life. He held the office of Justice of the Peace for thirteen years and it is needless to say his acts here as everywhere else were above reproach.
He last sickness was of several weeks duration; but he was patient; he knew his end was approaching and calmly gave directions as to how he would have things done, as to singing and services at funeral.
A good man, a faithful Christian, a kind brother, a true husband has gone and the world is better because William Clinton has lived.
The pall bears were Dan. W. Hayes, Walter Morrison, Harry H. Crooke, E. E. Forsythe, B. D. Smiley, Andrew M. Keck.
Services in M. E. church conducted by Hamlet Allen, Text Eccl. X11, 13, 14. Interment at Friendship Baptist Church cemetery."

"ZACHARIAH GARTEN DIES.
VICTIM OF HEART TROUBLE. FALLS WHILE WALKING ON STREET AND EXPIRES INSTANTLY.
Zachariah Garten, one of this communities best known farmers, dropped dead on the streets of this city Sunday afternoon about 3 o'clock. His death was due to heart failure. Mr. Garten drove to this city Sunday morning to spend the day with his brother Zimri M. Garten, and in the afternoon the brothers walked down Race Street to the home of Capt. Z. V. Garten. After spending some time at the Garten home they started to return and were coming up the street opposite the Christian Church when Mr. Garten suddenly stopped and sank to the pavement. He was dead almost before reaching the ground.
While troubled with a weak heart, he had been enjoying fairly good health this fall, and was able to go about any place he desired.
Zachariah Garten was born on the old Garten homestead in this county November 22, 1846 {1847?}, and had he lived ten days more would have been 70 years of age. He was a son of William and Margaret Garten, pioneers in the county. When rather a young man he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Crossline {Crossland}, and to this union three children were born, two of whom survive. These are Mrs. Nellie Doane and Mrs. Lulu Doane, both of whom reside in Texas. He is also survived by four brothers, whom are James, John, Harve, and Zimri, all residing in this county.
Mr. Garten was a farmer and stock-raiser by occupation, and was widely known throughout the county. The funeral services were held at Good Hope Thursday Rev. C. H. Buchannan in charge. Burial was made at Walnut Hill cemetery."

Elizabeth Flinn Clinton was a daughter of Jacob and Belinda Flinn and was one of a family of twelve children. She was born in Lawrence county, January 7th, 1834 and practically all her life was lived in Odon. "Mary H. Phipps was born May 23, 1820 and died August 16, 1900 aged 80 yr. 2 mo. and 23 days. She was married to Benjamin Phipps July 8, 1841 and to that union six children were born, four of whom are now living. On the twentieth of June she suffered a stroke of paralysis. She bore her afflictions with true Christian patience, never murmuring or complaining.
"Aunt Polly" as she was endearingly called by all was a member of the Baptist church and a true Christian in the strictest sense conveyed by this word so dear to the hearts of the enlightened world. Her's was the simple faith of the humble followers of Jesus of Nazareth - the faith that sustains and comforts in the most trying moments. Her belief in Christianity was of that character which meets the scoffing of the atheist with a pitying smile and has nothing but charity for the sneer of the infidel. We cannot explain it. To those who fortunately possess such strength and grandeur that it gives to the lie to atheism and strikes infidelity helpless.
Her life work is ended, her sufferings are 'oer. She has gone to meet her reward. Her husband preceded her fourteen years in this journey which has human dissolution for its beginning. She leaves a son, three daughters and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The remains were buried at Mt. Olive Friday. Funeral discourse by Rev. Joel Ellis."

"MORTUARY
William Cravatt died Tuesday at A. R. Stalcup's where he has made his home for many years. "Uncle Billy", as everyone called him, was a soldier in the Civil war, being a member of the Sixth Regiment Indiana Volunteers {Co. H}. He was born in Brown county, and was 67 years old.
He was a very quiet, peacable man and everybody had nothing but kind words and praise for him. Several days ago he was taken ill, but had recovered sufficiently to get out on Saturday and came down town and got his pension money. Sunday he received a stroke of paralysis, from which he never rallied. He was speechless, and could not move.
The funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by Rev. J. C. Mills at the Stalcup home, and the remains of the good man were interred in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
"Uncle Billy" did not have a relative living, that he knew of, but he had a host of friends, and will be greatly missed upon our streets."

I am confused by the Elisha O Allen Obituary. According to "Roster of
Revolutionary Ancestors of the IN. DAR, Vol.1, pub. 1976, p. 12" John Allen b.
1760 Hunterdon NJ to Daviess Co., IN 1816 had sons:
1) William b. 1792 m. Elizabeth Eads
2) John b. 1794 m. Emily Manning
"Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Indiana, p. 36" Also shows John m. Emily
Manning
I do not believe the father (John Allen b. 1818 and m. Rachel Oshman) of
Elisha O. Allen, was the son of John Allen b. 1760 NJ. Do you have more info. on
John Allen and Rachel Oshman? Do you have an Obit for John Allen b. 1818 or
John Allen b. 1794?
I am anxious to find info. on the children of John Allen b. 1794 m. Emily
Manning.
