Hi Marilyn,
There are some Kavanaugh connections with this Mathews family I am
working on. Beatrice Kavanaugh married John C. Matthews of Loogootee.
He was born 16 Oct 1896 and died 30 Jul 1988 in Washington, Daviess,
Indiana.
Mary Cavanaugh was married to Owen Wilson and their son Chas. L. Wilson
married Gertrude Matthews. She was born 9 Oct 1911 and christened at
St. Mary's.
Good luck,
Shanna

Debbie, I have a Jonathan/Jonathon who was 36 at the time of the 1850 Daviess County census. He married Levina Kelly in Clark County 10-2-1836. They had a Sarah and a John W (among others). That is the sum total of what I know about my ggggrandfather. Can you tie him in with the William and Susanna you have? Please let me know if you find any more definite info that would give my Jonathan a set of parents or even a birthdate! Thanks, Alice

I'm looking for any information on a Francis Griffin (also may be spelled Griffen or Griffie). I think he might be G-G-G Grandmother's first husband who's surname was Griffin. Her maiden name was Cinderella Sulcer. Her second husband was George Starr and her third husband was Jacob Smith. She married both Starr and Smith in Daviess County, and maybe Griffin as well. She possibley had one son by Griffin - Elijah b. abt. 1834. She married George Starr in 1835 and two years later married Jacob Smith in 1837. She had two children from that marriage: Mary and William Smith. Her fourth husband was Israel Sterlin. Can't find any marriage record for this husband, but she had two more children with Israel: Adaline and Sarah. Would like to get more information on her husbands. Thanks to anyone who can help. Hello Barbara Lillyman:
Help me out here, who is John and JR Raney?
"I forgot to ask, is John Raney JR Raney's grandfather?
My uncle's notes say his great-grandfather was Jeremiah Raney.......
But I can't find any notes about his grandfather! Thanks."
James Virgil Raney and Mary Helen (Holland) were the grandparents of Jeremiah the dentist in Effingham, IL.
Jeremiah Riney Raney >James Virgil Raney >Jeremiah Raney >Jeremiah Raney DDS.
Like Shirley said, even though his tombstone says it, my ggg grandpa, Jeremiah RANEY, buried in St. Rose Cem, Martin County, was not a Rev Soldier. (That line was closed after the dedication of the tombstone about 1930).
According to the 1810 census in Marion Co, KY and Martin Co, IN census in 1820 and 1830, he and Mary Joan were born between 1765 and 1770, making him pretty young for a Sgt in the Rev. War. A Jeremiah RAINEY was the one in the NY 5th Regiment, according to records at the National Archives in Washington DC.
Jeremiah Raney, DDS was the 7th child of Jeremiah Raney, who was the son of my gg grand, JAMES VIRGIL RANEY b.4-4-1809 Washington Co, KY. To Martin Co, IN 1818, age 9, with family. Both bur St. Rose Cem, Mt Pleasant, Perry Twn Martin Co, IN d.9-21-1881. m. Mary Helen HOLLAND b.7-22-1820 d.4-22-1891 m.10-15-1839 Daviess Co. IN. 9 Children:1)Frank 2)Jeremiah 3)Mary 4)Johanna Raney Gootee 5)my great grandpa, John Allen Raney 6)Alexander 7)Thomas 8,9)unnamed.
Jeremiah (Jerry) Raney b.12-27-1842 in Martin Co, IN. (26 in 1870 census Perry Twp Martin Co, IN.) d.11-9-1914 Both bur St. Martin Cemetary m. Elizabeth Ann (Arvin) b.2-3-1848 Ire. m.11-15-1870 Daviess Co, IN d.1931 (dau of Joseph Arvin & Rose Ann (Hayden)

Hello,
I am new to this list. I recently came across some information in St.
Mary's Catholic Church book by Natalie Montgomery Baker. It referred to:
1) St. Mary's Sesquicentennial 1834-1984
2) History of St. Mary's Parish
3) Leading Leaders
4) Daviess Co. Book
Do any of you know where I might get access to these books? Are there
any available to purchase and where, or do any of you do lookups in
them? I'm working on a MATHEWS or MATTHEWS family from Barr Township.
Thank you for your time.

Hi,
The Jeremiah Raney buried at St. Rose Cemetery in Loogootee, Martin Co, IN is
NOT the same Jeremiah Raney who served in the 5th NY Regiment in the
Revolutionary War (despite the erroneous info on the tombstone). They are
two separate individuals. Jeremiah Raney who served in the 5th NY Reg during
Rev War never came to Indiana.
The tombstone was erected by the Daniel Brooks Chapter of the DAR. A few
years ago, after further research the Jeremiah Raney buried at St. Rose was
ruled out as being a Rev War soldier and his line was closed by the DAR. For
further information, you could contact a member of the Hindostan Falls
Chapter of the DAR which is based in Martin Co, IN.
There is another Jeremiah Raney, born 1842, Martin Co, IN son of Col. James
Virgil Raney and Mary Helen Holland. He married Elizabeth Ann Arvin in 1870.
They are both buried in St. Martin's Cemetery, Martin Co, IN. They had 9
children, one of whom was a son, Jeremiah Raymond Raney, DDS b. 1886 who
married Marie Dreyel in 1922 and he died in 1966 in Effingham, IL.
There is a fourth Jeremiah (Riney) Raney, b.1765-1770 in MD, died abt 1840 in
Daviess Co, IN. He married Mary J. "Polly" Sheehan Moore (widow of Coll.
Alexander Moore) in Washington Co, KY in 1797. She came to US at age 5;
moved to Martin Co, IN 1818. This Jeremiah Riney/Raney was the father of
Sarah Ann Matilda Riney, Elizabeth Hester Raney, John Felix Raney, Col. James
Virgil Raney, and Jonathan Raney.
In the St Mary's, Barr Twp, Daviess Co records:
Mary Raney d. 9 April 1854, age 93 years; buried with
J. Raney, d. 3 Mar 1845 age 60 yrs
It is doubtful that J. Raney who died 3 Mar 1845 was the husband of Mary
Raney who died in 1854. There is an age disparity here, and it doesn't seem
to fit any of her children.
Hope someone else can offer more information to help us here. ~Shirley
