SYLVESTER SMITH was born in Daviess County, Ind., in
1823, and is the son of James and Martha (Mattingly)
Smith. He received a limited education, and at the age
of twenty began as a farmer on a rented place. Some
three years later he purchased twenty acres of timber
land, on which he built his first log house. He now
owns a good frame dwelling, surrounded by 400 acres of
very fine land. In 1843 he married Martha A. Gootee,
born in 1825, who bore him fifteen children: James,
William, John, Martha, Sarah, William, Barbara,
Charles, Marion, George, Thomas, Lee, Francis,

and during the last four years has given almost his
entire attention to stock trading. In 1874 he
purchased a thoroughbred Norman horse at a cost of
$2,750, and in 1883 purchased another which cost
$1,800. He has held the positions of director,
vice-president and superintendent of the Martin County
Fair Association. He is a Democrat, and as a farmer
has been very successful. Mrs. Smith is a daughter of

Awhile back I was in contact with some of the members of this list (concerning Potts relatives), but I didn't get around to joining the list until now.
Some background
My mother's parents came from Washington, Daviess Co., IN:
*EMMET DANIEL MAHONEY (though sometimes it was recorded as Daniel Emmet) and BERTHA LLOYD POTTS
--My grandfather was the son of Irish immigrants, JOHN MAHONEY (County Kerry) and ANNA HART MAHONEY (County Mayo), who are buried in St. John's Cemetery, Washington IN.
--They had 3 other sons: RAPHAEL LEO, (who died in 1915 of cancer); and THOMAS and JOHN, of whom I lost track after 1918.
--All the men worked on the railroad, my great-grandfather JOHN dying in a rr accident in 1912 which was reported on the front page of the local paper in all its grisly detail.
--JOHN and ANNA settled in Washington, after moving through Dearborn Co., (where E.D. and John were born) and--I think--having met, married, and had Thomas in Cincinnati.
++Right now I'm trying to find out what happened to THOMAS and JOHN, and to dig deeper into the Irish roots.
BERTHA LLOYD POTTS was the daughter of ULYSSES GRANT POTTS and FANNIE A. FARRIS (from Dubois Co.)
--U.G. Potts was the son of JAMES HARVEY POTTS and ELIZABETH EDWARDS; J.H. was the son of SAMUEL POTTS, who came to Daviess Co. between 1813 and 1820 from Nicholas Co., KY. I'm trying to dig deeper there. (I have tentative information that SAMUEL was the son of FREDERICK POTTS and CATHERINE HAM from Berkeley Co., WV.)
--ELIZABETH EDWARDS was the daughter of WILLIAM EDWARDS and HARRIET KNOWLAND.
--WILLIAM was the son of HENRY EDWARDS and ELIZABETH RODARMEL.
--ELIZABETH RODARMEL was the daughter--I think--of JOHANNES RODARMEL and EVA CATHERINE MARKEL.
--I haven't yet been able to find HARRIET KNOWLAND's ancestors in KY.
One of the big roadblocks is the absence of church records on the frontier. I hear tell that there HAD been a family Bible, but that it got lost or burned in a fire. RATS!
Well, I look forward to being part of a group of Daviess Co. researchers!

I am looking for my Great Grandfather, William Myers. I do not know much about him. His daughter was Cora Jane Myers. He was married to Cora's mother, Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Greenwood-Foster. He was to have died before Cora (my grandmother) was born. Cora was raised by her Step-father, John Rodarmel. Below is two pictures of William Myers. I am posting a reply here as my husband's g grandpa Walter BURRIS was in KY as he supposedly helped build the Gold Depository at Ft. Knox.
Maybe the elusive BURRIS ancestors we have will start to emerge for us, so we can record them. I have been hitting a 'brick wall' for near 5 yrs now in trying to find anything on my husband's g grandfather Walter L. BURRIS.
He was b.ca.1883 TX or I.T. and i do not have his parents names or any other family names.
He m. 5 Mar 1903 in Cumberland I.T.(thank God i found a copy of his marriage license) to Willie May ABLES. They brought up their 9 children in Cumberland area of Indian Territory.
Family hearsay according to my husband has been there was Native American(yes he heard Cherokee too) in him. So far no documentation shows up for him. There are BURRIS lines that are Choctaw or Chickasaw i have found, but i still cannot find him listed.
Supposedly our Walter BURRIS helped build the Gold Depository of Ft. Knox. He got the flu the year it was fatal for many and d.ca.1919.
Any hints or other data you may have to share, please do.
Happy Trails, Joan *_~
