All the census records for all year, including soundex, can be ordered from
the Family History Library or any of its branches.
Go to www.familysearch.org, click on Family History Library System and then
on Family History Centers to find the one nearest to you.
These films can be ordered for about $3.75 and you can request an indefinite
loan if you need it for a longer period of time. They also have a great many
Daviess Co. primary resource materials (probates, court records, marriages)
on microfilm for loan. You don't have to go to Daviess Co. to see the
materials!
Good luck!
Michele

Hello Ben: Do you have in any of your Kirby line a George W. Kirby probably born in the late 1860's. This Kirby is related to a James family whos children are Emma Helen James who married James Roy Henry in Vermillion County in 1885. Willie A. James, Rosa James Black. She is married to a George W. Black. Lewis James, and someone with the initials ERJ. I have Emma Helens autograph book and this man has signed it in 1884 and called her cousin. Other cousins were John Coll (Call), Hollie and Orville Hale, Lizzy Wick. Do any of these names fit for you? Emma Helen is my husbands great grandmother and she died in 1886 when her son was just months old. There is nothing known of the family at all.

Debby,
If you are an ancestry.com member, you can pay an extra fee to view census images online.
Personally, I have lots of problems with ancestry.com (specifically because of the number of errors in its databases), but I have found that in some cases their census images look better than what you can get on CD from Heritage Quest. Also, you can rent census microfilms from a few places (which you can read at your local library).

John L. Keck Jr. was the son of John L. Keck and Nancy Jane Ragle,
apparently one of two children of this couple. His sister, Taletha Keck, is
buried in Burns City Cemetery [listed as "Laletha", d. 1937]. John Jr. m.
Alice Hamilton. That is all I know about this "first cousin twice removed."
I would be delighted to either be put into contact with the descendents of
John Jr. and Alice, or to receive any genealogical details that anyone
might know. Both John Jr. and Taletha attended the Preparatory Class,
Indiana University, as [high school] seniors for the year 1880-1881,
according to IU records.
Thanks,
John Ragle

Eric Sause: It is SOOO good to hear from you. I put queries out there all the time, then finally I hear from a close relative!!!
Would you like me to send you a copy of the Sause family history that my Pop, Matthew Joseph Sause and his brother Leo did many years ago? I have added some information to it.
In what part of the country are you?
My grandparents Matthew Marcellus Sause and Mary Margaret (Mayme Bradley) left Daviess Co, IN in the early 1900's and went to Illinois then Kansas City, where most of their children were born. I grew up in KC and live in Iowa.

Melanie Wayman wrote quite a bit of detail to answer Carin Baxley's request
for info about Washington, IN. I have stayed in Theroff's, and it is quite
adequate. It is a few blocks out of town to the south, out of the traffic
and near some fast food places.
I was surprised to see that Ms. Wayman omitted mention of the Carnegie
Public Library. It has a modest genealogy collection in a separate alcove,
and is well worth a few hours of reading and general "poking around." The
staff are quite helpful.
The details are:

Washington Chamber of Commerce (812) 254-5262

I'm going to be in Daviess County sometime in the next 2 weeks. Can anyone
recomend a motel in a nice part of town? Also, is there a library or
historical society where most of the genealogy information is stored? If
not, where is the best place to start researching once I'm there?
Thank you,
Carin Baxley

Jacob H. CRABBS has purchased the farm on which his father-in-law, Mr. John THOMAS resided, which added to the number of acres he had before, makes 320, of about the best land in the county, all under fence. We believe it is the best farm in the county.
