Hello, Listers-
I am glad that Norma Key posted the information about the book, "The Alford
Brothers-"we all must dye sooner or later."
I have read this book and it is a wonderful historical account of the
"everyday" lives of the residents of Daviess County during the Civil War and
how the war impacted one family, the Alford family who founded Alfordsville.
In the letters that the three brothers write to their family and the letters
the family members write to the brothers, there are many references to
several Daviess County families and their Civil War soldiers. I would not
hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who loves history and is interested
in Daviess County. It is well worth the money!

I wondered if you had a Van Dyke Creager in your data base. Van Dyke is the
name that I think I see on the Census records of Daviess County, the record
is hard to read. One of my Bird children was living with him and his family
in the census, I think 1870, and they lived very near my people. I wondered
if you might know of a relationship in the families. They might be related
even several generations back. Or they might have just been helping out with
the family.
I have also seen on the Family Tree Maker CD's A Creager/Bird family tree,
from Kentucky, to Indiana, to Council Bluffs, Kansas. I don't know if it is
the same group as the Daviess County group.
I can send copies of the record if any one wants them.

Hi Sandi,
You wrote, "Between the WPA and the census records, which all match up,
I think we
are only dealing with one Alvin. What do you all think? Sandi"
I agree 100 0/0. We've got only 1 Alvin H. Burris and thanks to you I
finally have correct marriage dates.
Most of the pages I have from the WPA Index are very clear and sharp but
the ones I have for Burris/Burriss/Burress are very faint. I just rechecked
the date for Alvin and Melvina with a 10x scope and I'm still not sure but
it still looks like 1857 that just didn't make any sense. 1887 ties it all
together and I'm sure you are the one who is reading it correctly. Thank
you again for your help on this most perplexing problem that I had.
Joy, Kes
Dear Norma, Deena, Sandi, and the List,
Sandi - thank you for the correct marriage date for Alvin BURRIS and
Ella CHAPMAN.
What do you have for the marriage date of Alvin BURRIS and Melvina RANEY ???
I'd like to suggest something about Alvin BURRIS - Could we be looking
at 2 DIFFERENT Alvins????
This is what I have.
1- 1870 Daviess Co Census:- Alvin H. BURRIS age 7- giving a birth about 1863
2- 1880 Daviess Co Census:- Alvin H. BURRIS age 17- giving a birth about
1863
3- WPA Marriage Index Daviess Co:- Alvin R. (could be a "H" - hard to read)
BURRIS born June 30, 1863
married Ella H. CHAPMAN Sept. 5, 1909
(Note from Kes - Appears that these 3 Alvins are the same)
4- WPA Marriage Index Daviess Co:- Alvin H. BURRISS (note the double "S")
married Melvina RANEY March 15, 1857 !!!
The marriage date for Alvin H. BURRISS of March 15, 1857 is either wrong
in the Index, I am reading it wrong, or there were 2 different Alvins. He
couldn't marry before he was born.
When I got my computer a year ago I only entered part of the the
information I had on the James BURRIS family and I set aside the families of
Henry and Seth, the other 2 presumed brothers of James. With all the
activity with the BURRIS surname I'm playing catch-up trying to put the
information into FTM so it makes sense to me. Sorry I can't help on James
R. BURRIS.
Wish you all Joy, Kes Truelove
Looking for parents of Lydia A. Tranter age 14 in 1850 census of Daviess Co.

age 50.

Daviess list members.
I remember a request for information on the Wratten
Murders, but don't remember who asked.
I found a whole chapter, about 13 pages of material
telling of this murder(s). Included are drawings of
the Wratten Home, suspect, Judge, prosecutor.
September 18 1893
The Wratten murders occurred about nine miles
southeast of Washington Indiana. The event involved
the family of, Hillard Denson Wratten of Harrison
township. This family had no known enemies. Dennis
Wratten was a farmer, age 35. The rest of the family
included,Elizabeth Wratten the grandmother age 61,
Stella J. Wratten age 9, Henry J. Wratten age 3, Ada
C. Wratten age 32, Ethel Wratten age 11.
Stella was the widow of Samuel Wratten, a member of
"G" company, 42 regiment, In Inf volunteers. He had
been wounded in a battle at Lookout Mountain on Nov 23
1863, & died three days later.
On Oct. 19 1893 the grand jury indicted; James E.
Stone, Martin Yarbrough, Grandison Cosby, Gibson
Clark, Alonzo Williams, John White, William Kays.
Two days later the grand jury returned a 2nd bill of
indictment. This bill named James E. Stone as the sole
defendent.
Apparently he(Stone) lived about a mile south of the
Wratten family & had heard rumors there may be money
in the house. Dennis Wratten was ill with typhoid
fever at the time Stone knocked on the door asking for
medicine for a toothache. This was sometime after
10PM. All of the Wrattens were sleeping. Stone entered
the house & killed all family members.
James E. Stone(Bud) was found guilty and hanged.
The whole story can be found in-Davies Co In History-
vol 1.

Does anyone know who the parents of Rebecca Burris were? Rebecca was
born about 1838 Kentucky. She married Abraham C. Perkins 14 Dec 1854.
THe Perkins lived in Barr Twp. She was evidently ded by 1884, as Abraham
married Sarah Raney in 1884.
Any information would be helpful.

Dear Listers,
If anyone is related to the Dillon family or just for interesting
reading, there is a book called Indiana Gothic by Pope Brock about Ham
Dillon at the turn of century, who lived in Elnora, Daviess Co Indiana.
He fell in love with his wife's sister and is eventually gunned down on
the streets of Washington, Indiana by the sister's husband.
It gives a little about the times back then.

Pat,
Sorry I don't have any information on the Lydia you are seeking. Do you
happen to have any information on the Elijah Chapman and his wife, Maria
Johnson that she was living with? I have been trying to link them up to
the other Chapmans in the county.

Kes, Deena, Norma, and the list,
I think this is all one Alvin Burris. I have copies of the WPA that I
printed off the microfiche printer--I own the fiches, but have to go to
the library to read them. They generally are light and difficult to
read; however, I've learned to darken them up until they are nearly
negatives and they become quite clear.
Alvin H. Burriss (yes, it is spelled with two "s"s, though I don't know
if that is the fault of the person who wrote the original marriage
certificate, the transcriber of the certicates entries, or the typist of
the WPA list...) married Melvina Raney on 15 March 1887, book 6, page
280. This still leaves them expecting their first child, Helen, in May,
two months later, although I really don't think this was as uncommon as
we all like to think.
Alvin H. Burris, then married Ella K. Chapman on 5 September 1909, book
12, page 462. This record also indicates Alvin's date of birth, 30 June
1863.
Between the WPA and the census records, which all match up, I think we
are only dealing with one Alvin. What do you all think?

Hi Kes, Norma and Deena!
I have the WPA indexes -- the date for Alvin and and Ella Chapman's
marriage is 5 September 1909. Melvina didn't die until 1907; Alvin
married Ella following her death. Ella then died in 1921. I don't show
any further marriages for Alvin before his death in 1958.
Is it Alvin R? For some reason, I have him as Alvin H. Could just be I
just misinterpreted that wonderful handwriting you find normally on a
census...
Also, is the James R., the son of Benjamin and Eliza, shown on the 1880
census as born ca 1874, the same as James Robert Burris, born (according
to his tombstone) in 1872, who married 3 July 1902, Augusta G. Burris,
the daughter of Milton Lloyd Burris and Ida May Allen?
