Message Board Post:
I found my copies of Joshua D. Leach's will and probate file papers from Clinton Co.
Indiana this morning. The will, dated August 23, 1855, leaves everything to his wife, Ann,
and after her death, gives $200.00 each to his three daughters, Eunice, Hester Ann, and
Margaret. The remainder of the estate is to be divided equally between all lawful daughers
and sons. The sons are not named here.
Two sons, John and Abel W., are named as heirs in 1864 in a codicil to Joshua D.
Leach's will. Each of the three daughters is to receive $100.00, John Leach is to
receive $200.00, and Abel W. Leach the remainder of the estate.
When Ann died in 1878, the estate of Joshua was settled. In those documents, three more
sons are mentioned (for a total of 5). They are James G., Francis A. and Joshua.
As far as I know, all are children of Margaret Gobens. When the grave stone was ordered by
Abel for Joshua D.'s wife, Ann, he stipulates that she is his step mother and that the
stone is to match that of his father, Joshua.
Since the last three sons were not to benefit from the estate, there are no signatures or
places of residence listed for them. Able is living in Guthrie County, Iowa, and John is
in Indiana. Two of the sisters have passed away by the time that the will is probated.
Their children are listed in the final settlement. Abel purchased the house and lot in
Frankfort.
Ann's household goods were to go to Priscilla Harker. The Harker family plays a roll
in the Leach family. I am still trying to find the connection. They lived near the Leach
family in Butler County, Ohio, and Priscilla is living with Ann at the end of her life.
William Harker is witness to Joshua D.'s will. They may have just been friends, but
there may be another connection.
I have found several Leach family trees on ancestry that trace Joshua's family back,
but none so far that list his sons. I have left a message for the person who has listed a
maiden name for Ann to see where she found that. I will keep working on the family and
will add your information as I verify it. The 1860 census was a little hard to find. I
have not tried to follow any of the other sons excepy John. I may have some information on
him, but need to verify that, also.
I will remove the death information for Edwin, son of Francis A. Thank you for setting me
straight on that. Now I need to find out who Edwin H. is.
Everything is further complicated by the fact that there are other Leach families living
in Clinton County at the time and they seemed to stay there, so most of what I have found
refers to them. There may be a connection a generation back, but we are still working on
that, also. I will look forward to hearing from you again.
