Mary Ann,
You mention the surname "Smiley". Which Smiley family were you talking
about? I've got Nancy Smiley that married Joseph H. Pickard in Clinton Co.,
In.
Nancy Smiley was born in Pulaski Co., Ky. (1846) and moved with her
grandparents to Clinton Co. by 1850. There is another Smiley family in the
1860+ time frame that I haven't connected to yet.
Donnie Pickard in Indiana
I know little of the Smiley line. My ancestor, Margaret "Aunt Peggy"
SMILEY, was born 1 Apr 1783 in Cumberland Co. PA to Thomas SMILEY, Sr. and
Margaret ROSS. She and died 13 May 1864 in Clinton Co., IN and is buried
at Bunnell Cemetery. Margaret was married about 1800 in Mifflin Co., PA to
Joseph A. DOUGLASS, Sr. Like many families, they farmed many years in
Preble and Butler Counties in Ohio. After Joseph died, Peggy moved with
their ten children to Indiana. She was living with her son John DOUGLASS
in Jackson Twp., Clinton Co. at the time of the 1850 census.
Margaret had at least seven siblings: John, William, Elizabeth, Rebecca,
James, Thomas Jr., and Ross.
Her father, Thomas SMILEY, Sr., born 28 Feb 1753 at the foot of Shade
Mountain in Cumberland Co., PA, was the son of "Old John" SMILEY b. 1710 in
Scotland and his wife, Margaret BUCHANAN. His parents immigrated about
1740 to Mifflin Co., Penns Colony. Their known children were (besides
Thomas): James, John, William, Margaret, Mary, Rachel, and Archibald.
That's about all I know. I hope this will help you make a connection.
Best regards,
Mary Ann Hanson maise(a)continet.com
