I hope someone can help me with my rather difficult ancestors. Never hit so
many dead-ends before.
My 2 gr-grandfather, John Stewart, Jr. b 9/8/1834 d 12/31/1863, is named on
the family headstone in Plummer Cemetery just north of Hillisburg. Until this
afternoon I assumed that he was actually buried there. Our family history
states that he died from appendicitis OR an accident. I just accepted this as
fact. (I know better, too!) It hit me this afternoon that his widow was
receiving a pension in 1883 and there's no way it was from any other husband's
death. That tells me Civil War service. So I tried to look up the records,
but there aren't any for states through KY--same fire that hit the 1890
census. Just my luck!
Can someone direct me to a county or state resource? Plummer Cemetery is
maintained, but I don't have a contact name or number. Thought there might be
some sort of record--an old obit, some sort of funeral home archives, a war
memorial, local histories. Did the state keep any records similar to the
pension apps?
Appreciate any info at all. Thanks.
