The were Americans who fought in China prior to US entry into WWII as
The American Volunteer Group. They eventually became know as the "Flying
Tigers". They were lead by Claire L. Chenault who went to China in 1937
and operated in secrecy. He did not actively recruit American pilots to
aid China against Japan until 1940.
There were also Americans serving in England as flyers from 1937. The
flew for the RAF as "Eagle Squadrons".

If my memory is correct our nation was not involved in a war in 1937 but I
believe that was about the time of a Civil war in Spain and there were
citizens of the US fighting in that war, in fact I think some were
mercenaries. The fact that we were still in a depression led some of our
young men to take soldiering as a job. This is off the top of my head so to
speak so would need to check a history book to know for sure.
