Hi Mark,
In 1880 "Center Township" includes the city of Frankfort and land
immediately surrounding the city.
We have a copy of an 1878 Clinton County Atlas which was reprinted by the
Clinton County Genealogical Society (2000). The 1878 plat map for Center
Township does not show any land owned by a Charles SHAFFER or a Henry SHAW.
In the Atlas there is also an 1878 plat map of the city of Frankfort and it
does not show either of the names, but most of the identifications are of
subdividers of the land. If one or both owned land in the city they would
not show on the map since the ownership of most lots is not
identified. Also, if they rented property in Frankfort, or anywhere else
in the township, their names would not appear on the maps.
We have transcribed the 1870 Indiana Census for Clinton County and searched
for Charles H. SHAFFER and Henry S. SHAW and neither are listed.
We checked the 1860 Indiana Census CD for SHAFFER in Clinton County and
there are two families but neither are in Jackson Twp., (the name of the
township of which part in 1872 became Center Twp.) and neither family has a
Charles.
Charles may have lived in Frankfort and perhaps the best bet locating his
residence would be a Frankfort City Directory for 1880 -- if there is one
in existence. City directories often listed the business and residence
address of the individuals.
Hope this helps...
