This is in reply to a recent query on the list as to whether the use of
NOBLE as a first or middle name is an indication that this is a surname
that should be searched for in the family.
After Indiana became a state in 1816 there was a James NOBLE, one of the
first two U.S. Senators from Indiana. Noah NOBLE was governor of
Indiana. I don't know the length of term he served but he was governor
during the "Black Hawk War" of 1832. So, there were certainly "NOBLE"
families in Indiana.
With the use of NOBLE as a forename in both of our families, however, we
can find no connection to a family with the surname NOBLE. We have
concluded that this is a name with "a nice ring to it" that may also have
been used as a tribute to senator or governor NOBLE.
The same query also asked about the surname STEWART.
We have 82 STEWARTs in our family files in collateral lines.
If we had STEWART name(s) and date(s) we would be happy to check for any
matches.
