Obit on Alexander A. Clark from the Frankfort Crescent, dated June 18, 1897
Alexander A. Clark Dead
Special to the Crescent
ROSSVILLE, IND., June 15--After an illness of nearly one month, Monday afternoon at 3
o'clock, Alexander A. Clark died, aged 64 years and 13 days. Mr. Clark was born in
Juniata County, Pennsylvania, June 1, 1833, and came to Indiana with his parents in 1850,
locating on a farm one and one half miles southeast of Rossville. He afterward moved to
Carroll County of which he was a resident of 21 years, moving to Rossville in 1886, of
which town he has since been a resident, for a short time being engaged in the mercantile
trade. He, with the exception of a very short period, at which time he espoused the
greenback theory, has always been a working democrat, and as such was repeatedly elected
justice of the peace in Democrat township, Carroll County, and Ross township, Clinton
County, and at all times dealing out justice with impartiality to those who hapopened to
come before his court. He has long been a member and consistent worker in the Baptist
church at Rossville.
Mr. Clark was married to Margarette Bowen, May 27, 1858. To this union was born ten
children, three of whom died in infancy and one, Melissa (Clark) Hendricks, March 6, 1889,
at the age of 32 years. The widow, three sons, Mathew A. of Carroll County, Truman and
Orion of Rossville, three daughters, Mrs. Cora Calloway of Rossville, Mrs. Bertha Cox of
Darlington, and Mrs. Ella Beisel of State Line, with one brother, James Clark of Arkansas,
and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Nipper of Monon, mourn his death.
Funeral services occurred Wednesday at 10 o'clock at the Baptist church.
Interment at the Rossville cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. W.P. Tedford.
