DENTON, John M.
JOHN DENTON DIES AT SOLDIERS HOME
FORMER FRANKFORT POLICEMAN SUCCUMBS FOLLOWING LONG ILLNESS; BODY BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL
John M. DENTON for many years member of the Frankfort police force, well known throughout the city, died at the State Soldiers' Home in Lafayette, at 11 o'clock last night. The body was brought to this city from Lafayette this afternoon. It was taken to the Comley Undertaking rooms, pending arrangements for the funeral. Mr. DENTON was 62 years old, and was a veteran of the Civil War. He lived in Frankfort until about five years ago when he moved to Kokomo. Several months ago gangrene developed in his left foot. During last May an operation was performed in which the member was amputated. Since then his health has been steadily failing. He entered the Soldiers' Home and has resided there for several months. DENTON served for several years as the Deputy Marshal of the city, and served as policeman under George W. BIRD. He became one of the most popular policemen that ever did service in this city. His numerous friends declare that he was conscientious and scrupulous about his !
duties, yet was well known for his fairness. For many years he maintained his membership in Dakota tribe of Red Men of this city, and was in good standing in the lodge at the time of his death. He also was a member of the Blue Lodge of the Masonic Order in this city. He is survived by three children; Claude DENTON, who is at the Soldiers' Home in Marion, Earl DENTON of this city, and Miss Prudence DENTON of Kokomo. The deceased was a soldier in the Civil War, but being a mere boy when he enlisted.

DENTON, John M.
FUNERAL OF JOHN DENTON
Funeral services for the late John M. DENTON, who died Friday night at 11 o'clock at the State Soldiers' Home in Lafayette, were held in this city this afternoon. Rev. E. T. Howe, pastor of the M.T. Church, officiated at services held at the Christian church, at 2 o'clock. Members of the Masons, Red Men, and G.A.R. post attended the services. Burial was at Bunnell cemetery. The body was brought to Frankfort Saturday evening and was taken to Comley undertaking parlors, where it remained until the hour of funeral today. Apoplexy was the immediate cause of Mr. DENTON's demise, although he has been failing in health for several months. His illness dated from the time of the Arbor Day celebration held in Frankfort two years ago. With a number of others, Mr. DENTON was seated upon the speakers stand, at the southeast corner of the square, when the structure collapsed. He received an injury to his right leg which afterward developed gangrene. Finally the limb was amputated below th!
e knee. Since then his condition gradually weakened. He entered the Soldiers' Home last May and visited the city once since then.
Mr. DENTON was a resident of Frankfort for many years, during a large part of which he was a member of the police force and was also a rural mail carrier. He was a policeman for 14 years, serving two years under Marshal Jones and under George W. BIRD. He proved an efficient officer, and made a host of friends in the city. While engaged as a rural mail carrier he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He left the service but returned later. Finally his failing health compelled him to retire from active work. Although of southern birth, Mr. DENTON served in the Union Army during the civil war. He first served as a member of the 57th Indiana Volunteers and after being mustered out, re-enlisted in Company I, 157th Indiana Volunteers with which he served during the remainder of the war. He was past 66 years old, having been born March 21, 1847, a son of David and Sarah BOLT DENTON. He was a native of North Carolina. He came to Indiana with his parents, and was married to Miss Nettie STRA!
TTON. His wife died 40 years ago. Four children were born to the couple, of whom three survive. His second marriage was to Mary M. SPRAY. She died December 25, 1910. Two children were born of this marriage, both surviving. The five children are: Mrs. August HOLCOMB of Lafayette; Miss Prudence DENTON of Muncie; Samuel DENTON of Arkansas; Claude DENTON of Marion; Earl DENTON of Frankfort. The deceased belong to the Friends church. He held membership in the Masonic order, the Red Men, and G.A.R.

DENTON, Earl "Coxey"
DENTON RITES TOMORROW AT 2;
Services for Popular Fireman Will Be Held at the M.P. Church
Funeral services for Earl (Coxey) DENTON, city fireman, who died Sunday morning at the hospital following a brief illness, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Protestant church on North Jackson street. Revs. COON and KERLIN will officiate and burial will be in Bunnell Cemetery. DENTON, who had been a member of the Frankfort fire department for the past ten years, had been ill two weeks and recently submitted to an exploratory abdominal operation. Pneumonia is said to have been the direct cause of his death. For some time, prior to his entering the hospital he had been suffering from appendicitis. He was born in Frankfort, July 5, 1891, and was the son of John and Mary SPRAY DENTON. His early life was spent here and on September 11, 1915, he was united in marriage with Miss Leora Francis HOWE, who with several children survives. For many years prior to employment on the city's firefighting forces, he was employed as a boilermaker at the Clover Lea!
f (Nickel Plate) shops. He entered the shops as an apprentice and completed his trade there. He served as a member of North Main street fire department crew for the past eight years. He was a member of Blue Lodge of Masons, Woodmen of the World, and the Indiana Fireman's Association. The immediate survivors are his wife, four children, Mary, 18; Helen, 16; Charles, 14; and John, 11. One son, Robert, preceded him in death. Claude DENTON, Frankfort, is a brother and there is one surviving sister, Miss Prudence DENTON. Mr. DENTON was well liked and had a host of friends. Residing in Frankfort during his entire life, he had become acquainted with hundreds of persons who admired him for his genial manner and his sincere friendship. His death was a genuine blow to a great many persons who listed him as a true friend. Friends may call at the Goodwin Funeral Home where the body will remain until its removal to the church.

I added partial cemetery listings for the following
cemeteries:
- Bunnell
- Fair Haven
- Green Lawn
- Rossville
The listings I have for these are from obits only and
are very limited (about 30-50 for each cemetery).
Since these cemeteries are really large I do not
intend to transcribe them, however I will add burials
to them as I receive obits and gravestone photos.
Also, I am only adding burials to the alphabetical
list of all burials in the county when I complete a
transcription for a whole cemetery, so the folks
buried in these 4 cemeteries will not be put into that
main file (this is to help keep me from adding
duplicate burials).
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inclinto/vitals/cemeteries.htm
So far we've got 26 (including these 4) out of about
85 cemeteries in Clinton County!

Thanks to Mary K.'s resourcefulness I have a township
map! It's a recent map with all the current roads,
etc., so I think what I will do is trace the township
lines and highlight cemeteries before I post it. I'll
probably also post the original that she's sent me so
those who are interested may print it out for use as a
road map if they want.
I'll let everyone know when it's posted.
Thanks Mary K.!

I would suggest that you contact your local library and see if they can
obtain a copy of the township you are interested in from the Indiana State
Library in Indianapolis. It might cost a few dollars, but would be cheaper
than driving there!
I never underestimate the resourcefulness of the local librarians to help

At different times there are questions asked about the beginning schools in Clinton Co., IN. Although there is some information more information is wanted.
So to this list I am asking that anyone who has any information on any school from the beginning of the schools in Clinton county, IN to please contact me. The time period would be 1830 to 1900.
The information would be any newspaper clippings, graduation notices, any reunions that was held in celebration of those who attended the schools, photos of the schools, writings one may have, etc.
The names of schools and/or Churchs currently working on Boyleston in Michigantownship, Dillard which became New Hope Friends Church, Bethel, Lookout School, Thurman, Pulaski Meetinghouse with these being in Sugar Creek Township.
