Message Board Post:
I looked Amandus up in my family tree last night and found his obituary that I'd copied from the Frankfort Morning Times. It's pretty informative.
The Frankfort Morning Times, Saturday, October 29, 1927
BODY OF AMANDUS D. HALL FOUND HANGING IN BARN AT HIS HOME
Ill Health and Worry Said to Be Cause of Man Ending His Life on 47th Wedding Anniversary; Funeral to Be Held Sunday.
Despondent over ill health and worrying over financial matters and a debt that had fallen due which he was unable to meet, Amandus D. Hall, for 48 years a prominent and highly respected farmer of Madison Township; hung himself shortly after one o'clock yesterday afternoon and ended his life on the 47th anniversary of his marriage.
The body was found hanging in the runway of the barn at his home by L. D. Waldron, of near Mulberry and Charles Kersey of Colfax, who had gone to the Hall home, a mile and a quarter south-east of Mulberry for the purpose of buying some stock.
Earlier in the day Mr. Hall had arranged with the two men to sell them some of his stock. It is said that he had a note falling due yesterday and had planned to sell the stock to meet the payment due.
Mr. Hall had suffered a stroke of apoplexy on May 30th and since had been in failing health and also had met with financial reverses that worried him and caused him to apparently remain under severe nervous strain and friend stated that recently he had been acting "queer." Members of the family also stated that he had for some time shown but little interest in his farm and seemed to worry greatly.
Worked in Field
Yesterday morning he worked with a hand cutting corn but when to the house at the noon hour and laid down on a bed [line illegible] one o'clock when members of the family went to the patch to dig potatoes, he got up and went to the barn and was not again seen alive. About 1:30 o'clock the men arrive to buy the stock and went out back of the barn and looked over the stock and members of the family thought he was with the stock buyers.
As Mr. Waldron passed along the west side of the barn he chanced to glance into the runway of the building and saw they body dangling from the end of a rope and with Mr. Kersey, entered the barn and examined the body and saw life was extinct.
Son is Called
The two men went to the house and telephoned Francis Hall, a son who came quickly from his home. The son lifted the boy to relieve the weight and Mr. Waldron climbed to an overhead beam and unfastened the rope and the body was then laid on the hay. The body was warm and life had been extinct probably less than half an hour.
Coroner Frank Strange was summoned and the inquest disclosed the man's neck had not been broken but death was resulted from strangulation.
The body was placed in charge of a Mulberry undertaker to be prepared for burial. The man had climbed to a loft, placed the rope over the beam. On the loose end of the rope was an iron well hooked through which he looped the rope after placing it over his head and about his neck. He then climbed down a ladder as far as the rope would permit and then swung off into space and was strangled.
Native of Pennsylvania
Amandus David Hall, a native of Pennsylvania was a son of Nathan and Louisa (Redline) Hall. He was born in North Hampton County, Pennsylvania, April 7, 1857, and at the time of his death was past 70 years of age. On October 28, 1880, forty-seven years to the day of his death, he had been united in marriage with Christie A. Gartner, who survives besides nine children. They are Nathan Hall, of Lafayette; Francis Hall, Frankfort RR 7; Mrs. Idella Miller, of this city; Milton Hall, of South Bend; Irwin Hall, of Lafayette; Mrs. Lavina Snyder, Frankfort RR 8; William Hall, of North Hampton, Pa., and Walter Hall, of this city. Three children of the couple died in infancy.
More than 48 years ago Mr. Hall with his wife came to this county from Pennsylvania and established their home in Madison township where they had since resided.
Funeral services will be conducted from the family home at ten o'clock Sunday morning, Rev. Whitman of the Mulberry Lutheran Church officiating and interment will be in the Fair Haven Cemetery.
I have more information on some of the children if you will tell me which ones you are interested in I can send you that as well.

I am interested in this family. As you saw in the information Karen posted (Thank you Karen!) Amandus's son William was married to Mary B. Cart(e). Mary was my gg-grandmother's younger sister. Mary died in Lafayette the 1920's (I think '27 but I won't promise you that's the right date) after she had a baby. William and Mary had 3 children, I know there was a son John and a daughter Lola, can't remember the 3rd child's name. After Mary died I think William and the children moved to Pennsylvania. I have been unable to find them and I would love to know what happened to them. I think I have a bit of info on Amandus but I can't remember if I have anything other than dates.
