I know there is the DAR date the John Mills Bateman ancestors have provided. I'm
assuming the area John/Joel settled in New York (milton township, renamed later to Genoa
and Lansing, Cayuga County) because of the land grants given to the Rev War Vets as
promised by New York. This land was already settled by Native American Tribes. The early
history accounts of this area only mention the surname Bateman in the census and in the
historical research for the county database ($$$). The books that are available for free
mention early settlers, but no the BATEMAN surname. I'm guessing here that they sold
their land like many of the Veterans did to avoid the lengthy title, and moved on to the
midwest where they appear in Ohio.
I have seen three dates for the Death of John/Joel. 1825 (DAR record), 1808 and 1806, in
Butler County Ohio. I'm not sure what cause the three boys to leave Ohio and go fight
in the 1812 War in Louisiana? Did Joel die early and they all moved to Louisiana? Did
Carleton go first, followed by his younger brothers?
I know after that Carelton and Noah went back North and received (at least Noah did), land
grant/warrants/ for land along the EEL River. He is written about in this thread plus it
is sourced in several historical accounts of that County in Indiana as the first Resident
(s) in that area. Noah served on the first Grand Jury.
John Mills Bateman's history is very well documented in Louisiana, as is Noah's up
north.
Their parents/grandparents are the Big mystery to me.
I'm stuck on that. lol
