John Luther, son of Christian, lived in Clay County, Indiana during the
1830s. He was in Izard County, Arkansas, in 1840, and in Ozark County,
Missouri, by 1850. His wife's name was Sarah, surname not given. I have
found a deed in book A, Clay County, p. 186, dated 5 March 1832. Purnell
Chance and Starling his wife of Clay County cell land to John Chance. I note
that the only daughter of John and Sarah Luther was named Starling Susanna.
Oops, they also had a daughter, Sarah, apparently their first, while Starling
was the youngest. They also had a boy named Purnel.
Has anyone researched the Chance family? Did they perhaps have a daughter
who married John Luther? Or a daughter, Sarah, no one knows what happened
to? I haven't looked at the census to get an idea of ages of Various Chance
family members, but it sure seems likely to me that Sarah Luther, wife of
John, was at least related to this family.
In 1831 and 1832, at least, David Chance was agent for sale of clay county
lands. On 22 April 1832, David and Polly Chance are selling their own land
to John Luther, $150 for South 1/2 of Northeast 1/4 Section 32, Township 12
North, Range 5 West. Witnesses were William Slack and David Trout.
If anyone knows of anyone currently researching John Luther, I would like to
contact them. I have heard from two different members of that family, but
did not know they were connected at the time. That has been so long ago the
addresses are no longer good.
