I am putting this on the Clay List because there have been found
traces of Halls and Treats in Clay County who could have acted
as guardian of the subject of the follow query:
This is a query concerning the ancestors of Eliza Ann HALL Gallup,
who claimed to have been born in Grove(Union Co?), KY. The female
parent of Eliza Ann (c1820-1898) was possibly named (Mary?)
BARRI(N)GER per the back of a carte d'visite which was in the
handwriting of a very unreliable family member. Eliza was age 17
in 1837 when she married Orrin GALLUP, (my gg-grandfather) in
Spencer, IN with the permission of an unnamed guardian, so her
father was likely dead at that point. How she came to be in
Owen Co. IN then is unknown. There are several Hall families
in that vicinity but no connection to them has ever been
established. I find Halls in early proximity to Barrigers in Graves
County, KY. Tax lists in Livingston Co. show early Halls as do many
of the counties near Cairo, IL. There may be Cherokee or other
connections to the Halls. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would
be very grateful. I've been looking for this one for years with no
success. -- Julian
