I attended first grade (1955-1956) and beginning of second (1956). Mrs. Mary Anderson was
the teacher. The school had two classrooms divided so grades 1-3 were in one and 4-6 in
the other. Looking at the group picture of the 1-3 grades, I count 27 students (there may
have been some missing). Picture done by Eckard's photo.
Inside: the front door opened into a hallway with coat hooks, and 1-3 classroom was on
the left and 4-6 on the right. The grade levels were split into desk rows. Mrs Anderson
would teach one grade, give them something to do, and then move on to the next.
I don't think there was indoor plumbing when I started but I remember it happening at
some point (I think). I remember one incident of having to use the outhouse in the
winter (I wasn't allowed to use outhouse at home).
I remember taking lunch money (I think once, maybe twice/week) -- these days someone
cooked chili and I really liked it.
Most kids were bused in; I walked with my grandmother (Emma Sue Thomas (Kelshaw)). She
didn't want me walking alone because there were big gravel (or coal) trucks that
travelled on the gravel roads.
When I was in sixth grade, Novemember 1959, I visited the school and my grade cohort (my
grandfather, Nils Vego Thomas died ); I was in Perth for funeral. I don't know what
year it closed.
As an adult (sometime between 1985-early 1990's), I visited Perth. The school was
still standing, but closed.
What is your interest in the school?
